Hello. I am dealing with a malware infection on a workstation. It's infected with Desktop Defender 2010, and the owner has decided to format the drive. Problem is, I run the Windows XP CD, and it gives me an error message saying that there isn't a drive. I tried a Windows 2000 disk and got a similar error. What course of action should I take?
I will be happy to answer any other questions you might have, and thank you for your time.
If I remember correctly, Windows XP setup has a problem with drives above a certain size.
You may need to load up separate drivers via floppy disk in order for it to recognize the drive. What motherboard does the computer have?
It's probably a Sata drive, which XP doesn't have drivers for. There may be a setting in the BIOS such as "OS install mode" which makes it look like it's a IDE drive while you're installing it. If not, you should go to the drive manufacturers website and get the proper SATA drivers and follow their directions for putting them on a floppy.
