You should definitely get a Ubiquiti suite for better performance at a lower price, you can get a AP and an enterprise level router for less than half that brand new.

Not really, you just need something of a decent quality that has features you will actually use. Of course there's no point in your average joe buying this just to replace their ISP provided router without really making use of any of the features, and would probably be totally fine with a $50-100 router though depending on their home setup/needs.
