Computer running incredibly slow, no viruses no high cpu/ram usage.

For some odd reason my computer started slowing down hard core on just about everything except opening the start menu. I though it first started when I tried to open this song in winamp and so I have since deleted the file and its containing folder but it did not seem to help. I've done quick scans with malwarebytes and Avast! but they show nothing and full scans end slowing the fuck down once they hit D:/ drive like it take 1min just go through 1 .jpg file. and as for the avast full scan it sometimes doesn't even start. And the whole time I try to check the cpu/ram usage with task manager but there is never anything over 4% cpu and ram is at 28% or less (have 6gb of ddr2 800). Also temps are all normal as well accourding to HWmoniter cpu: ~35C and gpu: ~45C (fermi).
I'm at a loss for what to do.
Could be an extreme case of fragmentation. Or the harddrive is pissing in a sea of piss so to speak.
Well drive D has 0.1% fragmentation according to defraggler
and drive C is at 9% (most of which i bet is steam)
And I defraged it about a month ago, plus would fragmentation cause a slow down so suddenly?
The hard drive could be failing.
Get HD Tune and check the S.M.A.R.T. status on the drive:

Installed it but the health tab is just blank. And a quick error scan showed nothing.
Have you enabled S.M.A.R.T from your BIOS as on default settings it's disabled atleast for me.
well here is what I get with HD tune and I'm running another error check for a screeny

7.2 MB/s MAXIMUM!?
Something is wrong with either your drive or your motherboard's controller.
The 1 second access time is awful too.
Restart the computer and go into the BIOS and enable S.M.A.R.T. monitoring and the status page should show up in HD Tune.
But regardless of being able to see that data, the drive is definitely having some severe issues. I suggest backing up data you don't want to lose, as it may fail at any time.
well shit, also I made sure to enable SMART in bios before taking screen shots and the health page looks the same for all my drives so I have no idea what that's about. Luckily I have 2 1tb dives that have 60% free space. I think I might reformat it and test it again see what happens.
I would RMA that Hard drive if you still can

Punchline: there is 250gb of stuff to transfer
It's going to take a while at your average speed of 1.2 MB/s :smith:

60 hours if I calculated that right :byodood:
well its discovered about 189gb now...
If HD Tune can't read the S.M.A.R.T. data on the drive, the drive controller probably doesn't handle it properly. There's a DOS tool called Spinrite, you could use that to do a surface scan on the drive in mode 2, or run it in mode 4 or 5 to rewrite the entire contents of the drive bit by bit, which sometimes helps.

probably a setting in the bios or a driver issue, on one of my old motherboards SMART data couldn't be read with the SATA controller drivers that came with it, generic ones worked. I was confused.
My Bios is up to date and looks like my serial ATA drivers are too. Still transferring my stuff from the drive though taking god dam forever.
Don't use Windows copy, use TeraCopy, it's much faster.
Okay well I backed up my shit and sent it off to WD should be getting a replacement soon enough.

Just curious, how long did it take to copy everything :v:?

Considering he started 2 days ago and ended today I'd assume >24.
Well I didn't copy everything, and it stopped a lot and I ended up doing groups of files rather than the whole thing. In total it was about a good 30hrs (at least 3 over night runs).

transferred about 200 or so Gb
