Valve has made a thing of updating their old games for bug fixes and compatibility for years now, what is so new in this?

Tbh Valve is, if anything, persistent in doing so. More than anyone else as far as I know

They have a pretty limited amount of games they've developed, and they're all using one of only two (soon to be three) engines, and they also run the platform they publish on. They're in a pretty unique position to keep their games updated.
