I'm thinking about trying my hand at Let's Playing a game. I'm probably not going to be good at it, I don't expect any views, but I tend to talk aloud when I play certain games anyway and I think it might be fun.
Are there any tips on how to do it well? Do I need to be funny? Do I need a deep, sexy voice? An alluring Australian accent? What games should I play if I decide to do it?
1. Record a game and record yourself talking
2. Actually be funny
3. #2 is actually #0
Also funny accents that are your natural speaking voice always are a big hit, especially British ones
Judging from who's popular, I'd say it's just the luck of the draw.
Oh, and it would probably do you some good to be funny. Have charisma. Have other positive qualities. Do stuff.
Press record and have fun.
Do you just want to be popular or do you want to letsplay for fun?
don't force anything
also if you record yourself playing online multiplayer with a few friends shit can get funny, game and friend dependent

Have fun, be funny when you can but never force it.
If you want to get major views easy, put up videos of new games the minute they come out, or do Let's Plays of games almost no one has done already (see: Evil Genius, The Movies). This requires the most luck out of anything really, but it can pay off.
When deciding your first game, make it a game you're comfortable with having terrible videos of. Consider it your 'test run'. Unless you're just naturally hilarious 24/7, the first videos are not going to be good. But don't let that discourage you.
For what not to do, see my channel.
Unless you want a fanbase consisting entirely of 10-year-olds. Then do what I do.
Get a webcam and point it at your face. Grab the spookiest game on the market, I recommend Slender. Start the game and speak in a silly voice to calm your audience down, be sure to take in the environment. Grab an ordinary object like a chair and give it a name. Have conversations with said object, filling in its side of the conversation with an even sillier voice. Only interrupt your silly voice with extremely loud screams because your game is very scary.
Fallow these simple steps and you will have lods emone in no time.
Exhibit A: Note excellent use of both silly voice and screaming. You probably won't get it right away. It can take minutes, even an hour to master the art of Let's Play.
If you're not actually having fun or think that something is funny, neither will anyone who watches
Don't do it for money, do it as a hobby
Be yourself really.
Try to stay away from "popular" games. No one wants to see a Let's Play of Halo 3 or whatever.
Don't just say stuff to say stuff. I made that mistake when I was doing a Cry of Fear LP. I only got as far as recording 3 videos...
Don't be Pewdiepie.

If you have a really annoying voice, you might just not record your voice at all and let the gameplay speak for itself.
Especially for short videos like motdef's stuff, commentary isn't really necessary.
Our channel was fairly successful despite having no commentary at all, but again, It probably wouldn't work as well for long videos.

Of course I will help you with a video!

Don't try to be funny just to be funny/entertaining, hell you are better off making a video of good funny moments instead of 10 minutes long gameplay x 100.
Never do forced facecams, especially on horror games
Play something you find interesting. Doesn't have to be good, but you need to entertain or frustrate yourself while doing it. (Look at Gamegrumps, they are over a 100 episodes on Sonic 06')
A let's play going like: "Lets do that... and what now... hmmm..." is something you wanna try to avoid.
That's why I'm not doing it because I often concentrate while gaming and then it's all silent...
Use a big facecam, try to be as wacky and random as possible, swear a lot and reference memes as often as you can.
Don't do Minecraft
Also don't be Ijustine.
She stupid as fuck, the only reason she's populair is because:
1. She's a girl.
2. She's attractive.

I hate her because she looked up and gave away Portal 2 spoilers during like the first chapter, but can't figure out the first "puzzle"
Make your Let's Play ALL ABOUT YOU and not the game at all.
Always remember to scream as often as you can and bring up rape whenever possible. Bonus points for having a huge face-cam and huge stickers over your video telling people to subscribe and like your stuff.

ftfy
Not saying that all Swedish people are hilarious, fun to watch Let's Player's (COUGH COUGH PEWDIEPIE COUGH COUGH :suicide) but people like Dopefish are fucking hilarious and half of it is because of their accent :v:
No facecam, and only cut out highlights
It all depends on what kind of person you are, but you also have to be somewhat entertaining, because people don't watch lets plays of people who just play and commentate with dull voice.
Make sure your microphone is on BEFORE YOU RECORD TWO HOURS OF FOOTAGE GOD DAMNIT

Also, if you can, use Dxtory instead of Fraps, because with Dxtory, you can have one file instead of many small files, you can set different devices to different audio channels (one for game, one for mic, and if you use Virtual Audio Cables you can have one for Skype) so you can edit audio easier and more effectively than with Fraps, and Dxtory is, in most cases, much less processor intensive and there's much less of a FPS drop.

This guide is pretty good for customizing Dxtory to work best.
