Looks fucking gorgeous but we're yet to see a decent game made with this engine
no crysis is not a decent game

Pretty sure star citizen is using cry engine. Not sure which version tough

It is using CE3, but it's not coming out anytime soon as far as I remember

The first one is, and the ports of it use CryEngine 3.
Honestly cryengine is criminally underused, I'd really like to see it in more games

well I dunno about CE3 but crysis 1 is fucking great, if you're good at it and like experimenting
if you go with the whole uncloak headshot cloak pattern it's pretty boring though

Do people really have insane problems with lens flares? Can you literally not see anything in the scene with a flare?
Lens flares in games are interesting... because our eyes don't actually experience them in real life. Instead of playing through a character's eyes, we're playing through a camera strapped to the character's face. That said, I think they do add to a game, but it's only because we're so accustomed to seeing them in movies and the line between games and cinema is getting more and more blurred.
I personally find lens flares to be obnoxious, but they don't ruin a game for me.

well we do have lens flares because our eyes arent a perfect lens but its nothing like a camera lens and nowhere near as pronounced.
well one of the cryengine main put off was the fact it used lua for entities,XML for weapons and then C++ for core gameplay
i mean when i learn an engine i prefer to just learn one lenguage rather than having to learn 3 at the same time just to master a single engine....

Battlefield 3 in a nutshell

I despise lens flare. Your eyes aren't lenses.
Well technically they are but you know what I mean.

Nah there isn't any dirt covering the screen.

That's why I hate them, our eyes are not camera lenses.
Our eyes don't create the dramatic and usually obnoxious lens flares modern game engines seem to love so much.
The Nanosuit has a visor though, so this is one of the only cases i'd say its justifiable.
You can turn off lens flare in the menu though right?

Yeah you should just go blind anytime you look near the sun.
Because the sun is really fucking bright and looking at it in a video game should fill your screen with "holy shit that's bright"ness.
I'm still after the super secret tessellated toad tech.

I dont know about you but If I stare at the sun all that happens is I get a circle burned into my retina that takes ages to go away, its not full vision blinding light.

As a piece of technology that allows you to turn invisible and throw cars at people, i'd have thought the nanosuit visor would have gotten around lens flare
Flares only happen with multiple lens elements. Having a vizor, and then your eyes would provide no flare. Maybe glare from the stratches in the vizor though. But flares are caused by repeated reflections between the elements in the lenses.

I do think that there should be a toggle, though I personally quite like them. I'm someone who enjoys all the stuff they end up putting in for cinematic reasons even if it's unpopular.

crysis is an excellent game
C3 is also excellent
C2 was just good
anyway cryengine is delicious - isn't it super expensive which is why it's so often passed up for inferior tech like unreal?

Last time I heard, CryEngine 3 cost somewhere around $1.2 million to license and Unreal only takes around about $100 and a percentage of sales after a certain amount of copies is sold. These are just rumors so I don't know exactly whether to if it's true or not.

UDK is $100 and a percentage of sales
it doesn't include a source code, though, which is totally fine if you're not going to be tinkering around with the engine itself
Do not mistake game engines for development bundles.
UDK is not Unreal Engine 3 in commercial sense. UDK is a stripped unreal3 game that you mod. You don't get source to actual engine.
Cry3 also has such a version.
The actual engine with full source and all that stuff costs a lot, be it C3 or UE3.
Well no but it's still perfectly viable to build a game in.
