I am looking for a good Ethernet switch and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good ones to get. I would like to get one with at least 5-8 ports maybe 10 at max.
I know Linksys (made) some nice switches back when they still had those cool stackable blue/gray colored devices.
Generally I have found that a switch in a metal enclosure and with some sort of mounting point was pretty good.
What kind of of performance are you looking for? A cheap network switch will have no noticeable advantage over an expensive one if you are just doing non-critical home networking.

unless you're paying thousands for a layer three switch there is no differences in performance between ANY BRAND whatsoever, just quality (of the product, not the output)
Well it would need to be pretty fast, as I am looking to do things like HD video streaming.
Get a 10/100/1000 Gigabit Switch instead of a 10/100 one then
Anyone know of any good ones?

Should I stick to unmanaged or should I go with Smart?

Am i better off going with This or this
go with smart if it's any more than one computer. unmanaged is pretty much just a hub
if it were a hub it would be using half duplex though, I wonder what makes 'smart' so smart

+1
I had a home server and my desktop hooked up behind a dumb switch a while ago. Even just moderate internet browsing would make the collision light go nuts and I noticed a massive speed improvement when I took out that switch.

Shit, i have one of those.
It looks like a baby WRT54G.

I'm a big fan of the netgear NETGEAR ProSafe line.
I own the 8 port and the 48 port switch from that series and I haven't had any problems with them since I first got them about two years ago.
I've had multiple routers/switches die on me in the past and the ProSafe stuff comes with a lifetime warranty, so that factored into my initial decision when looking for a switch.

it sends packets to the right machine first instead of hit each machine until it gets the right one. It's both more secure and more reliable.
