Ubisoft is already pretty aggressive with what it does
fuck me imagine if they got 20x worse
But in an interview with PCGamesN, Ubisoft's vice president of live operations Anne Blondel warned that losing its independence would likely have a very negative impact on the games it makes.
The dark lord has returned!
Yeah, imagine if this golden age of Ubisoft's creative independence came to a close. I guess we'd have to start by imagining how bad things would have been if Ubisoft had just spent the last 10 years saturating the market with its cash cow franchises, shovelware and intrusive "services". I certainly wouldn't want to live in that reality.
EDIT: Joking aside, what does this whole situation have to do with us gamers? This isn't the first time Ubi reps have done interviews about this, but this is business. Internet rage doesn't impact anything here, what do they care what we think of Vivendi?

I don't think you quite understand. Ubisoft now isn't the greatest (though they have put out quite a good array of games over the past few years) but a Vivendi takeover would completely ruin them.
when you think about it, even if Ubisoft isn't doing good right now quality and DLC wise, they're actually one of the better companies out there compared to... what is OUT there
just look at whats happened to Rare, or god forbid, the people behind mass production mobile rip offs.
Hell, Gearbox is even worse. At least Ubisoft isn't ran by an insane liar
sounds good
just look at Zynga
easily one of the worst things out there, assuming they're even around still
Ubisoft is a saint compared to fucking konami, too.
what exactly makes vivendi a terrible company? I dont know too much about them so I have no idea about their impact
Honestly I don't hold any ill against Ubi. They are a company like any other and yes they make some bad games, bad decisions, some bad people involved here and there. But every goddamn studio, every goddamn company has that.
They have some talented people who make fun games in interesting IPs even if there has been some very big miss-steps and too much milking. Vivendi would fucking ruin that and it also sets up a scary concept.
What if this happens to other companies/studios? I mean its business, its not unique or new. But Ubisoft is one of the oldest and fairly big. I am unaware if EA or any other big game company is publicly traded, but imagine what it might mean for them if stockholders and investors realize they can totally do this.
It is a net negative for everyone. It is a negative for gamers, it is a negative for the good people working at Ubi, it is a possible negative for the future of gaming.
This sounds like another case of "just fuck my shit up"
Ubisoft has a lot of issues, we're all aware, but even they don't deserve a Vivendi takeover
Out of all the really big game dev/publishers out there, Ubisoft is definitely one of the least shitty ones.
yo, lets be real here for a minute, ubisoft makes really good games. the later far cry games, some of the ac games, rainbow six siege, watch dogs 2, etc
when people talk about dlc and bad ports and stuff like that they are merging the people responsible for those with the creative minds working on the real games
Whatever happened to Vivendi? I thought they disappeared years ago, which leads to my confusion about how/why Vivendi could possibly take over Ubisoft.
This is inevitable, unfortunately. A question of time.
The poor Guillemot family must really feel the heat rising as they soon may lose control of their company.

Vivendi seems to invest heavily on media [1] [2] or sites that aren't usually talked about on the forums here.
They used to own stakes in Activision Blizzard until they bought them back in 13 ( Which might explain why they're really interested in Ubisoft and Gameloft ).
Personally I don't follow them, so I seriously don't know what a Vivendi takeover would be like, but I doubt it would be anything good.
Why exactly can't Ubisoft just say "no"?
Why exactly can't Ubisoft just say "no"?
not familiar with french law but i'm assuming they are attempting to bend the rules and perform a hostile take-over of the company in some way that I'm totally ignorant of.

But i've no idea how this shit works so
Why exactly can't Ubisoft just say "no"?
It's hard to say no to the people who literally own you
the problems with a publicly traded company. there are ways around this but its gotta be dealt with when the company is first founded.
Their best bet is getting the government involved -- there's been a lot of hostile takeovers by this company and its pretty dangerous. They VIOLENTLY took over Gameloft -- they got 30% stake which triggered a mandatory "hearing" of sorts that forced all of the stockholders to put their stocks up for sale -- including the owners -- to which they bought them and took over Gameloft. This is very bad news.

If you want to read something really scary in the regards to "why is this legal", look at PeopleSoft
They better not ruin my R6. Its the only shooter I can enjoy these days.
Woah suddenly everybody is sympathetic to ubi
Well I still think they're a shit

Do you want shit or shit mixed with flammable chemicals set on fire and thrown on your face
because the latter is what you get from Vivendi.
[editline]a[/editline]
Plus, Ubisoft's been getting better recently, I'd hate to see that progress be wasted.
This to me sounds like a cautionary tale to not go public.

I unironically think Far Cry 4 is a fun game that's absolutely chaotic (a rare sight in video games) and I'd like them to go further with those concepts. A Vivendi buyout would force them to play it safe and go back to producing less interesting games like they were after Assassin's Creed 3.
Say what you will about Ubisoft as a company, they usually do very off beat ideas for AAA titles, regardless if they milk them to hell and back. I just want someone to at least make weird shit like Zombi or Blood Dragon even if sometimes the end result isn't very good.
im still mad we couldn't side with pagan min in fc4 except for that one easter egg
[editline]25th November 2016[/editline]
siding with those other two nutters was a far cry from satisfying
Why exactly can't Ubisoft just say "no"?
The owners of Ubisoft don't have majority shares in the company, so Vivendi is attempting to buy stock from various shareholders so they get a 51% stake in the company.

they don't have to bend the law, they might just have to make a really good offer to the value majority of ubisofts shareholders depending on how ubisoft has set up it's shares.
also i'm pretty sure anti monopoly courts would laugh their asses off about a merger like this being contested there so unless ubisoft has set up something regarding their shares or other contractual "defences" to keep majority of the shares in the current top owners hands.
the """""""problem""""""" is that most investors will be ultimately looking at numbers and dollar signs with the many other factors in a company only as potential for those.

Not gonna lie bruh, this is a pretty cool pic. Makes you think how even evil Ubisoft still gave us great gaming memories over the years.

they are shit, but I'd rather they didn't become more shit lol
