It's about that time of the year any recommendations? Resident Evil 1, 2, and 4. 1 and 2 are tense and chilling. 4 isn't that scary, but has a fantastic atmosphere.

For more so the dressing up aspect of Halloween, the original Ragnarok Online(granted its just hats and some masks)? You also do fight ghosts, demons, zombies and the like. While not free, GTA: San Andreas and Saints Row 2/3/4 could to a degree work for the dressing up angle. Can't recommend anything for horror value though.

Dwarf Fortress, terrifying biome or Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead. Maybe Killing Floor too.

If you're into really dark shit, both of the Manhunt games are fantastic. If it really HAS to be free, you could try Cry of Fear. What I played of it was pretty decent. There's also a few good Half Life 2 horror mods that I can't remember the names of.

In terms of HL2 horror mods, Nightmare House 2 is one of my favorites. It's a jumpscare fest, but it's a lot of fun to play. Call of Cthulhu is a pretty good game if you want some Lovecraftian horror.

Like massive stairs that lead back to the area you were already in. Or obelisks that psychedelically bent forwards as you looked up higher and higher.

I do remember some pretty weird shit near the end of the game, though.

Yes, Nightmare House 2. Don't worry about downloading part 1: it is included in part 2, you'll see it in the menu. Play part 1. It absolutely sucks compared to 2, but play 1 anyway, because it is short, so you understand the plot more. Then play 2 and have a great time.
