• Microsoft Security Essentials turns itself off
    7 replies, posted
I don't know why, it started a few days ago. I've done some full system scans, but no virus came up. Update to the latest definitions as well. Just want know if anyone else had this issue. It turns off with a red 'X' on it. If I try to turn it back on my computer locks up and I have to restart. On top of that, my Windows TEMP directory keeps generating TMP0000000 (with random numbers/letters) that keep growing in size. I'm really thinking about formatting as I haven't done it in almost a year.
Make sure that your MSE is the correct bit version for your windows OS.
If you've been thinking of formatting anyways, and you got everything backed up / don't need it, then go ahead, really. If not, download "Hijack This" and post the log. (Don't fix anything yet).
Plus Windows Explorer seems to be crash a lot lately.=/ What are good free alternative to windows explorer? There is a possibility you have a virus, judging by all the toolbars you have. Run Malwarebytes and see if it catches anything.
I ran Spybot and got nothing extreme. I'll try that too. 'Microsoft Antimalware Real-Time Protection feature has encountered an error and failed. Feature: On Access Error Code: 0x80004005 Error description: Unspecified error Reason: The filter driver skipped scanning items and is in pass through mode. This may be due to low resource conditions. " Also got this from event viewer. And Windows Explorer keeps freezing which leads to MSE turning off (which seems to happen when Windows Explorer freezes).
www.malwarebytes.org Download, run and do a full scan. NOT quick scan.
I did a quick scan first and found this.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.44 Database version: 3740 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.5512 2/15/2010 3:38:45 AM mbam-log-2010-02-15 (03-38-45).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 113869 Time elapsed: 6 minute(s), 7 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 1 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\regfile\shell\open\command\(default) (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: ("regedit.exe" "%1") Good: (regedit.exe "%1") -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. This might be we my Windows Explorer was crashing. I'm doing a full scan now. Edit: Might have been a band sector in my HDD. See, this all started after I download the Project Reality mod. The setup file was one gig. I think that was it. Also HDDs was displaying the wrong size of the folder. Something was only 187MB, it said 9.95 GB. I did a CHDSK and everything seems fine now. I'm still going to do the scan though. Better saft than sorry.
