Microsoft should just negotiate with the trademark holder; they have been calling it Metro for far too long, they can't just up and rename it now.
Oh good, I thought this was about the Metro series.

crisis averted move along
Instead of Metro, Microsoft has told developers to simply refer to the blocky display as a "Windows 8 style UI" for the time being.
Yeah, right.
I was under the impression that as long as your company sold different products, it would be okay to have the same name, see also: Apple Computers vs. Apple Records until iTunes launched. I'm not sure how a supermarket chain competes with a UI but I guess it shows the patent and trademark industry is still pretty BS.
'Motion' would be a pretty cool name.

Useless shit sounds like a good one.
Microsoft... Uhm...
Ridiculous.
I didn't know metro was a word you could trademark like that
Aren't there quite a lot of stuff already named "metro"

In theory you can trademark generic names but you can sue only when someone else uses that name in the same field. So unless that other metro is also a visual style, microsoft isn't infringing trademark.
That's of course theory, the law is so fucked up anything is possible.
Call it Windows, because they look like windows.
Call it "Set of boring colored blocks with icons on them"

Looks really nice, don't know if we are looking at the same thing or you're just another blind hater jumping on the metro hate bandwagon.
Thinking something looks boring and hating it is the same thing.
I'm beginning to think about staying out of the software business.
Seems like you can't make ANYTHING these days without SOMEBODY suing your ass off. >_> Quite irritating to tell the truth. This is NOT helping innovation, its stifling and killing it.
They're tiles. Call it tiles.

Metro sucks. Windows 8 sucks. End of story.
