What exactly is supposed to establish this as something other than generic space marines shooting each other?

Promises, basically. They've promised a cooperative campaign with rpg-style progression system for your character and a bunch of other features. I picked it up for a dollar on the indie gala sale, and it seems very basic. What they have is pretty optimised, and plays well, but theres not a lot. A couple of maps with one gamemode and a single weapon. It runs nice, and the dynamic weather is a nice feature, but that's all there is. I'm waiting for the single player campaign, personally. But hey, if it turns out to be shit or vaporware, I only wasted a dollar.
You have to admit tho, Interstellar Marines is a pretty boss title.
I remember when back then it only had a shooting range. Not much has been added really. The development is so slow I have no hope for any sort of campaign.

"Optimised" is a pretty fun spin on the fact the levels are basic with very little in the way of decoration, the dynamic lighting is just there to distract your attention away from the baron levels. Especially for an early access game the rate content is added to the game is very slow indeed and I think this is the most significant thing they've added to the game since I decided to buy it a few months ago.
It doesn't give me a lot of hope for where this game is heading since they have been working on this game since May 2005.

They've had funding issues since 2005, it was in development hell for awhile until Greenlight, Kickstarter and their own fundraising attempts. They don't have a publisher so they literally need to fight for their own funds, or at least used to.
I've been following the progress with this game for a while now. I'll admit that they haven made really huge changes very quickly; they've been updating very slow steadily, but I understand why. Regardless of that, the developers are pretty close to the community. The gameplay is pretty simple, yet I had a lot of fun playing with their community gatherings. Their periodic updates, especially this one, are enough to keep myself interested.
People really don't get the kind of shit this team went through, and how quickly and suddenly they've been making progress recently.
I mean, they've had a terrible run with the crowdfunding efforts because it's hard explaining abstract gaming conepts to a market full of jaded cool-guy knowitall fuckfaces (Look how many shitheads here insist that Titanfall is COD or Destiny is Borderlands because they can't grasp that interesting things can be done with old concepts), they've switched engines, re-done everything from the ground up about five times in the current engine, and now they're just starting to actually have a game to build on. I can understand how the prospect of this project looks dubious because their track record, but they've been walking against strong winds since the start. Now that they're starting to get their feet, they're kinda motoring. The last handfull of updates have been pretty meaty imo. I mean, they just rebuilt the movement system. Again. This is like, the third and prolly final time. The first time was just a projection, the second time was a quick attempt to get a system that worked for networked play, and this one is to match the target established in Running Man, but one that works networked. This is probably the rig they're gonna stick with I hope.
But if anyone with a copy can look at the spearhead folder, they can see that the future of this game is bright. Especially with those new marine models, UNF.
