Advice on formatting & selling laptop, should I take extra measures to be safe?

I'm going to be selling my 2 year old laptop shortly, desperately need the cash and I haven't actually got much use out of it, especially since I got a Macbook Pro two months ago. I'm going to reformat the harddrive and install XP SP3 again. I'm selling my W7 desktop shortly too, I've two harddrives with quite a lot of personal information, passwords and the like so any suggestions that are compatible with that would be great.
My question to you is should I be worried about people trying to recover certain information? All I have is some photos from holiday and some videos/photos of friends from a party on my laptop. I don't think a hacker type would find much information, but I'd just like to be safe, is there anything I should do to fully clear the drive? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure what it means by that, is hardware that has something wrong with it. Not hardware that isn't powerful.
