I just discovered, that my 12-year old laptop(toshiba 4020cds) hasn't got proper cooling, because, the thermal paste stickers wasn't properly installed. There is still a protecting white sticker over the f*cking paste.
should I take this laptop to service??
They're not going to do a damn thing about it.
Service wouldn't know what to do with it.
You could probably fix it yourself if you know what your doing.
Rubbing alcohol to remove the current paste, then go buy some good stuff from newegg or wherever and reapply. Simple process, It was fairly easy to get into a 2004-era Toshiba when I needed to clean it, a few more screws and I would've been able to take off the heat sink.
Hey, this is Facepunch, OP, you can fucking swear as much as you fucking like to and no one will give a motherfucking shit.
How is that relevant?
He censored himself. It's not relevant to his question, just a future reference tip.
toss it imo

I miss-read it, sorry.
Let me just make sure we're on the same line:
You wanna take a 12 year old laptop to a shop to get fixed?

...and because there's a stupid sticker between the heatsink and the paste?
A 12 year old mistake?
You're describing yourself.

forgive me if this suggestion seems out of line but: no why would you even care it's a 12 year old laptop
[editline]28th October 2010[/editline]
really what are you going to do if they deny you service, because they will, threaten to sue or something? over a laptop probably worth less than $50
I'm surprised a 12 year old laptop with messed up cooling even works anymore.
there's no point trying to fix a 12 year old laptop
smash it and record it

I'm also surprised
Don't bother paying for it to be fixed, there are so many things that you can do with it for free:
Door-stop
Paperweight
Murder weapon
Window prop
Cutting/soldering surface
TV-dinner tray
Stepping stone
Anvil
Pretend laptop for kiddies
Cocaine snorting surface
Combinations of the above, as yet undiscovered by man or beast.
You could switch it on and use it as a plate/cup/bed/hand/ass warmer (or combinations thereof). Or you could use the monitor as a reading light.
Or you could even use it as a portable computer that overheats all the time.
There's a million-and-one uses for an old laptop with poor cooling. Just open your mind to the possibilities.

Do this, and then keep the laptop alive for next 12 years. Then it will be worth something.
