If you properly format, no files should remain at all.
Also, It seems that you aren't very smart at keeping your OS clean and free from crapware slowing it down.
Maybe locate and fix the root of your OS problems, You.
I installed Vista because tech support refused to fix anything running windows 7, apparently including hardware unless I accepted a reformat.
And I'm not formatting, I'm installing, and I'm using disk images for windows 7, so everything gets copied to windows.old.
I don't have any kind of crapware/malware, and run Malwarebytes and AVG.
Yeah, great, go on and insult people asking for help, all I was asking for was if folders are supposed to stay, without actually reading the part where the problem is stated.
The only things that are modified when shit get copied to Windows.old are Program Files, Users, and Windows. Everything else will stay where it is.

i move all my savable files to a folder called "reinstall" on the root of the c drive, and then i manually delete the rest of the folders and files manually with a Linux livecd. then after windows 7 installs, i run a defrag with defraggler twice.
