you would be literally printing money it would change nothing about gameplay except make it EASIER to connect and play with other people
There already is a flourishing pokemon mmo out there, (obviously non official) the model they have it working on is pretty good despite the shitty devs and questionable community. Nintendo could probably learn a thing or two from the sheer popularity of it alone. http://pokemmo.eu/
As long as they stick to the original formula, it would be very hard to fuck up a Pokemon MMO. Hell, I'd play it.
Why won't you take my money?
Here's an abridged version of the article: "We're creatively bankrupt."
I can sorta see his reasons but there's just no way a MMO couldn't work, it's not 2000 anymore practically every kid who plays Pokemon can work their way through a MMO if it were made well.
I can't blame them for wanting to stick with what works. Pokemon has established itself to be a handheld seller time and time again. They're already reaching outside of their comfort zone with X and Y. Not to say I wouldn't kill for a pokemon MMO. I believe its possible, but ALOT of thought would have to be put into it.
I don't understand why people want a Pokemon MMO that's basically just the normal game but with multiplayer tacked on. The single-player story only works because it feels like you're on a grand adventure. If you start introducing loads of other players doing that same thing at the same time as you, it starts to feel a lot less special. If you left your house at the start of the game, and immediately came face-to-face with players who'd already beat the game spamming chat with trade requests, it'd be a bit jarring to say the least. I think what would be an interesting way to do it is some kind of hybrid where you might come across other players (picked from a group that's at roughly your stage in the game) from time to time, rather than the clusterfuck that a full-blown MMO would introduce.
So pretty much "gamers today have no interest in MMOS", the same way according to Nintendo "people don't want online connectivity"? A part of me feels that they really have no idea how much has changed in the last 20 years, but another part, despite not having been interested in Nintendo products in a long time, kind of admires that they are willing to stick with what they know.
How does it not translate? Put all those features in the game, then make it so more than one person can do it in the same game. Doesn't seem that hard. I don't even like Pokemon and I'd be willing to give it a try.

I mean, think about it, kind of takes some of the fun out of it when everybody is just battling each other's super-powered team of fully evolved starters and legendaries.
For a game like this you would need a LOT of virtual space. Imagine if it were all one shard and there were hundreds of bots spamming real-world trading offers and noobs asking where they're supposed to go, all crammed into Pallet town. Not to mention that there would obviously be a whole tonne of kids so rules concerning privacy and abuse would be tighter than 2006 RuneScape.

I do feel like Pokemon would lose the Hero's Journey aspect of it if they made the transition though.
