So yeah, title really gives enough info, but there's something I should add.
When I got my laptop a few months ago, I could play Dragon Age Origins on it no problem.
However, I just re-installed it and it just shutdown while downloading the DLC.
I don't get a BSOD.
I can't get temp readings.
Is there any way I can solve this or would I have to format and re-install windows?
Does it still boot?
It boots perfectly fine afterwards. It's just when I'm playing games that it completely shuts down after a while.
Can you check the Event log? Right click on My Computer, and click Manage. Click Event Viewer, and Open up Windows Logs. Poke around under System, look for "Error", "Warning", or "Critical" events that may be related.
Right, got a number of errors from the system logs, around the time of thread creation.
- Error IDs are 102, 7023 and 7001. Spread over 6 errors taking place in about 2 seconds time.
- The 102 errors have PNRPSrvc as their source, the rest are Service Control Manager.
- The 2 PNRPSrvc errors says 'The Peer Name Resolution Protocol cloud did not start because the creation of the default identity failed with error code: 0x80630801' and happens twice in 2 seconds.
- The 7001 error says 'The Peer Networking Grouping service depends on the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service which failed to start because of the following error:
%%-2140993535'.
- The 7023 error says 'The Peer Name Resolution Protocol service terminated with the following error:
%%-2140993535'.
Those aren't related, are you looking in the general timeframe of the crash you had?
Possibly overheating?

I don't think so, it was just downloading a DLC.
Why can't get you get temp readings? Does it physically not have sensors or something?

I don't remember the exact time.
However, I did just find a kernel error in the logs around 2 hours ago 'The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.'
But the system log doesn't give me anything round that time.

It's the whole 'rebooting before I can check'.

In-game, might I add. DA:O has an internal downloader.
Still, I was in the main menu.
It's most likely overheating. Put it on top of a rack so there's air beneath it. Put a fan there if you have to.

Did your ukelele hit the laptop while your daughter was playing with her red ball? Can you access your favorite sites?

That still doesn't explain that.
Oh, and it's on my desk, so solid surface.
Little help? Pretty please?
A few months is plenty of time for your fans to become clogged up with dust and shit. If you have access to compressed air cans, blow that shit out, something's obviously clogging it up. If that doesn't work, then I have no idea.

This + Putting the laptop somewhere where it the fans can work well.
Do you use the laptop while it's on your lap? Do you put it on a crowded table? Or on a bed?

No access to those. Alternatives?

On my lap? Rarely.
Crowded table? Well, maybe a cable or 2-3 near the fan exhaust on the left but clean otherwise.
Bed? Never.
