Because I'm a lazy prick: My friend is insisting on buying a laptop so what is the best one (buying WITHIN NEW ZEALAND) in a price range of $1000 - $1500 NZD. Also don't try talking him out of it. He's just that kind of special. He wants to play games and stuff and he's getting into modding so he'll need something that can render. Thanks.
Well he's beyond special. Gaming and rendering should be done on a desktop mainly.
You really need a desktop if you want good rendering and gaming capabilities.

If he's going to be rendering and gaming and with that kind of budget heres a nice asus, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834230100

I do highly suggest he gets a desktop if he doesnt plan on taking it anywhere cause honestly for $1500, You can build an i7 2600k which is great for rendering. But that laptop I linked you will be fine.
*Need to buy within NZ *Prices in NZD
Ah ok, let me find a new zeland dealer then. [editline]16th November 2011[/editline] Here, they are located in New Zealand http://www.elive.co.nz/asus-a53sc-sx222v-i5-laptop-t21180.php
He specifically said that he wants a laptop, and you both said get a desktop.
Just like when people want prebuilts, we say build it yourself. Same idea. It's better on a desktop usually. Circumstances can be different.

I am just as lazy as you OP so I am going to assume that 1 NZD is 1 USD. ASUS G53SX-S1137V I7-2630 Nvidia 560Ti 8GB memory. 15.6 Inch ect ect look it up on the asus site.
He specifically said that he wants a laptop, and you both said get a desktop.
I was simply stating what the best option would be for rendering. If he wants a laptop, why not just use Google, there are a ton of sites out there that you can buy laptops from, and you can filter results to price range etc., you'd get a better range of choice than asking on here.
