UseD PsP
I just plan on playing psp games and games that I bought from PSN that's on memcard way back
PSP 1000 or 2000. Full homebrew/custom firmware support galore!
If you are inerested, a lot of major eBay sellers are selling PSP GOs for around $129.99 because they ceased manufacture.
Used. Most of 'em have been sitting collecting dust since the dawn of time - I bought one late last year that came with firmware 1.50.
Then get a Pro Duo -> MicroSD adapter and install gPSP and SNES9x and some PS1 games on it.
Be wary when buying a PSP-1000, though. I bought a PSP-1000 off a friend, and his battery was completely shot. I bought a second battery, but they only sell generic brand batteries so it was a piece of garbage. I'd recommend a PSP-2000 if you're into emulation or a 3000 if you don't care, since those share the same battery.
I'd get a newer one, just personal preference.
Get a psp go so you can put homebrew on it and transfer all of your umd games to it (buy the game then download it from a torrent)
The go has 16 gb of internal memory

Hahaha.

Alternatively he could get a PSP 2000, one of these and two of these and have 32GB of usable space and still save a lot of money.
Ha, I remembered that my brother gave me his PSP. I think it's the first one, and its slow as hell. Maybe it needs to be reset, I'm not sure. I've been all for Nintendo DS (I bought the first one, then I got the DSi).

OK, it says PSP 1001 so I guess it's the PSP 1000.

PSP's get a lot more awesome after you hack them. Assuming you haven't already.
I'd love to hack mine but I have no battery since I fucked it up pandora-ing it
Still stuck on 3.90

You mean you're going to buy a PSP and... not hack it? That's the entire reason I bought mine. The PSP only has a few decent games anyway.

What's the best hack for it? I'm clueless on the PSP.

Apparently there are GBA/N64/PS1 emulators (though the latter is official)
so as with any other system, emulators are a big one
If you need a portable system, I would save up your money and wait until they release the NGP, or the PSPs successor.
Seems like the right place to ask, I've got a 1000 or 2000 PSP (a fat one is all I know, it's downstairs somewhere and I'm too lazy to find it) and I've always wanted to mod it a bit. What's the best way to do it, and what can I do with it afterwards?

That's what I did haha
Get the used one. It's a better deal and if you just want it for games, there's no point in getting the far more expensive one that gives you very little extra.
I bought psp with the full intention of playing it all the time, got custom firmware installed, but it's just sitting on my shelf collecting dust.

yeah I haven't used mine in forever, and now I can't find ANY of my UMDs
-snip-
I forgot mine in my text book heavy backpack. Found it with a shattered screen. Tried to replace it but broke it even more when i tried disconnecting one of the cables so i just left it to collect dust. Gave my battery and it's cover to one of my friend that needed free of charge though. Same with the analog piece.
And don't buy a psp you're going to get bored of it in a few days or after finish a game or two. Wait for the NGP, it looks promising. Kinda big though.

Mine's been collecting dust since I got an iPod Touch 4g perfectly capable of emulating lotsa things but it occasionally gets taken on long road trips because it's durable and it takes aftermarket (ghetto-rigged) batteries well
I sold my PSP slim? or PSP with games box and everything for 100 euro.
I use my psp slim more than my xbox. Mostly for e-books as i lost all my games
