• My Video Card is Runner Slower than an Inferior Model!

Pardon the typo in the title of the thread, I just noticed it... This is seriously pissing me off. My friend and I have nearly the same computer, both dual core, just different brands (mine's an AMD, his is an Intel). His video card (an 8600 GT) is performing faster than my video card (an 8800 GT Alpha Dog Edition), even though his is worse than mine! In Left 4 Dead, on the SAME settings, he easily gets 90 fps when nothing is going on. With me, I get about 50 fps. With something serious is going on (e.g. swarms of zombies) his framerate drops to about 50 fps. With mine, it drops to 20! What is going on here? Is the card receiving insufficient power? Please help me! My Specs (Cyber Power PC): Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Edition Operating System AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Processor NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT Alpha Dog Edition Video Card 3.00 GB of RAM MSI k9n4sli Motherboard 250 GB Hard Drive LC-A420ATX 420W Power Supply 1280x1024 Resolution His Specs (Compaq): Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Edition Operating System Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2160 @ 1.80 GHz NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT Video Card 2.00 GB of RAM 1440x900 Resolution My Graphics Settings: Antialiasing: 16xQ Anisotropic Filtering: 16x Shader Detail: Medium Effect Detail: High Model/Texture Detail: High Page Pool Memory: High His Graphics Settings: Antialiasing: None Anisotropic Filtering: ? Shader Detail: Medium Effect Detail: High Model/Texture Detail: High Page Pool Memory: High Please note that no matter what I set antialiasing and anisotropic filtering to, I still get the same performance.
I don't understand, you're computer is better in every way. The only difference being AMD and Intel, I can't see any reason his computer would perform better then yours.

Check the temps of the card on your computer, make sure it's clean of dust, etc. etc. and make sure there's no Spies sapping your computer. (I.E. viruses, malware, junk, etc.) Basic stuff I know, but certain things can mess it all up...
What resolution are you running at, as compared to his? That makes all the difference in the world.
I'm running at 1280 by 1024, and he's running at 1440 by 900.
Okay so the 3:4 equivalent to 16:10, shouldn't make that much of a difference.

It's relatively clean, and I don't have any spies sappin' mah compy.
Okay so the 3:4 equivalent to 16:10, shouldn't make that much of a difference.
Actually, its 5:4 to 8:5. Unless, of course, you mean something ENTIRELY different... ...I have a strange feeling I'm making a fool of myself. Anyway, you guys got any more ideas as to why this is happening?

This is a very odd one, I can only think lower clocks on RAM Or the mother board can't support it to the full extent
Are you both running the game with the same graphics settings? If not, what are the differences?
update graphics card drivers?
Have you tried overclocking the cpu? Just in case the cpu IS bottlenecking the card. Otherwise, idk.
This is a very odd one, I can only think lower clocks on RAM Or the mother board can't support it to the full extent
My ram is at 333 MHz, DDR2, and my motherboard works just fine for every other task. Kill everything that's running in the background. [antivirus, everything...] Update HIS drivers, or roll-back YOUR drivers. Trial again...
Could be some form of memory leak in a background process?
I don't have any memory leaks. When I updated my drivers, I noticed no performance drop or gain, so the drivers can't be the cause. Antialiasing and anisotropic filtering don't make ANY difference what-so-ever performance-wise. My antivirus is Comodo Internet Security, and I don't know what his is (probably Avast! or Panda Cloud).
How can you be 100% sure it's not a background process causing a memory leak?
Because none of my background processes are slowly increasing in memory until my system starts slowing down. I'm only at 39% usage, idle. Unless, of course, that's too high... Although I will admit, SVCHOST.exe taking up 98,492 K (with it being linked to Windows Audio Endpoint Builder) being slightly suspicious activity. ...Wait a minute... WTF IS FABS.EXE?! THE DESCRIPTION IS IN GERMAN?!
SVCHOST is a windows process.
I know. I stopped FABS.exe, didn't seem to do much :/ Perhaps this is a power problem? It shouldn't be, because I'm using the proper connectors. [editline]07:34PM[/editline] I just checked GPU-Z, the graphics card is running at x8 PCI-E speed, due to the hardware. Could this be what is causing my problem?
for a 8800 gt 16x and 8x dont make a noticible difference. Reinstalling your pc might fix your problem (if you havnt done so in over a year)
As i said in your other thread, you probably have a virus.
you probably got ripped on that prebuilt anyways
I don't have any viruses, ran a scan recently. Also, I didn't really get ripped off, except for the fact that the PC came with a 7300 GT. :argh: [editline]12:32PM[/editline] This is really pissing me off, what could POSSIBLY be wrong with my computer? [editline]12:43PM[/editline] Running a virus check, JUST IN CASE...
Antialiasing and anisotropic filtering don't make ANY difference what-so-ever performance-wise.
That means it's definitely not the GPU's fault you are getting those FPS. Maybe your CPU or RAM?
I've had this problem even after a clean install...
That means it's definitely not the GPU's fault you are getting those FPS. Maybe your CPU or RAM?
Maybe... It might be the official AMD Dual-Core Optimizer I downloaded and installed when I first got my computer... Perhaps you could help me figure out the problem? My CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.50 GHz. My ram is 3.00 GB with a DRAM frequency of 314.1 MHz.
oh god that CPU. I had a 5000+ and was bottlenecked to hell on it with a 9800gtx. after i upgraded i went from 12FPS on crysis to 26fps on average. i think it's your CPU dude. Since i upgraded to SLI i get 37FPS average.
