Ok what I just reformatted, and finished installing all of my drivers, finished installing my games configuring them, and everything. but now my ping is sky rocketing like shit. My ping is 200-300 in Chicago servers (I live in Chicago) and I don't know what the fuck, I installed Zone Alarm, and only allowed trusted programs to use the internet, this has happened before, and as soon as I shut off my computer, the ping rockets stopped. Help? also re-post thread :S
Only when hl2 is open, even when it's just on the menu? That's weird. Or is it after you've searched for servers - if so you need to get better router.

The router is not the problem for sure, I had XP 32 bit like 2 days ago and it worked FINE, next day after reinstalling and shit, now my ping is out the window.
TcpAckFrequency used to cause this problem, not sure if it still persists with the latest updates and whatnot. Try this fix anyways: http://wowacker.uuuq.com/
You made sure to install the ethernet/chipset drivers from the Asus website and not just use the ones Windows 7 finds?
Get Dr.TCP --->Here linky In TCP Window Size, enter 64240. This will max the amount of data you can receive at one point. Be sure to choose what adapter you are using, if the name comes up weird (like mine does), read through the listed names and find one you recognize. Also, what game are you running that uses hl2.exe? Portal? TF2?
It's probably got something to do with the earthquake, everybody I know was slowed down by it
It's probably got something to do with the earthquake, everybody I know was slowed down by it
Do you use a japanese proxy or something?
I use Window's network adapter, but i'll switch to another and see what is different, thanks
OP here on a new account to bump this basically. So I've gone through some trouble for the past 3 hours and nothing fixes this shit. 1. I don't know how to install the ethernet/chipset drivers from the Asus website, if you would kindly teach me how I'd be grateful. (First time installing drivers and shit) 2. When ever i update the broadcam adapter, everything breaks, and it won't detect the internet even, so I had to rollback the adapter to a less new version. 3. I use the default windows 7 connector, and I don't know what else to use. ?
You need to find the model of your motherboard. Then go to the driver download page of your mobo manufacturer and choose the right model to download proper drivers. Damn, apparently Asus does not have drivers for your mobo under win7. I'm not sure if vista ones would do the job.
Vista drivers should work in 7.
So I've replaced my router, nothing changed. My ping ONLY goes to like 300-400 when CS:S is open, I've tested it myself. Everything else is dandy, steam is getting high pings though. I have a WMPN300 wireless adapter, and I don't need the software for it, as windows 7 does the job itself. So I still don't know what the problem is.
Ok, heres the about the only other thing I can think at the moment. Get wowTCPAcker, Google that and run it. What it does is reduce the time the the server and your computer communicate to each other on whether or not either has gotten a packet, this reduces it to around ~1ms. It may help, sorry I can't help you any further at this time.
Have you tried the optimization tweaks we have offered? I don't think you have.
yea
Zone Alarm
:argh:
hey ZA is good for some things Also it magically fixed itself after a restart. ok? :S
Did you restart after applying any of the optimization tweaks? They won't come into effect if you don't. Also, ZA is horrible for all things.
Say it with me kids: PORT FORWARDING.
Unlikely to decrease latency
Check your firewall settings [editline]13th March 2011[/editline]
Unlikely to decrease latency
If it doesn't have to go through a nat server it will decrease it a bit
