Hi!
I've got a raspberry pi, access to a lab, and a ton of liquid nitrogen. My obvious thought is to try to super-overclock to Rpi using the liquid nitrogen somehow, but I'm not hugely knowledgeable about doing so and I was hoping someone here might have suggestions regarding what to/not to do, as I'd rather like it not to instantly stop working.
The obvious thought is to just straight up submerge it in the nitrogen (cooling it down slowly first, not just chucking it in), but I'm concerned it won't run at all and that doing that could cause issues with the SD card.
Any suggestions/good links to check out? :smile:
This is honestly just as pointless as trying to overclock a calculator with liquid nitrogen.
The ARM CPU on RPi doesn't generate much heat to begin with, nor does it overclock well. Go with a conventional desktop x86 CPU and motherboard if you want to have some fun doing extreme overclocking with LN2 instead

Eh, it's a bit of fun. :smile: There's a guy who got it up to 4 or 5 Ghz using Liquid Difluoroethane, so I'm curious as to how high I can go with LN2 before it gives up!
Going to do some thermal imaging and various bench marking before, during and after which will produce some cool images.

That's a fair point, actually. Unfortunately I don't have anything else to overclock sitting around at the moment, but I'll look into getting something :smile:

I don't think overclocking an ARM CPU is worth getting dead over. DFE is fine in a closed loop refrigeration system, not so much being sprayed out into the air.

If you're looking for a fun OC project, have a hunt for an old P4 system on Gumtree or the like, shouldn't be too hard to find and you'll have infinitely more fun tweaking alongside LN2.

I used LN2 in a huge lab, safety definitely isn't an issue. I didn't manage to overclock it that far, but did some experiments with thermal imaging which was pretty cool, and it ran fine submerged in the LN2 which was pretty impressive! I'll post some pictures when I get the SD card out of the thermal camera.
I have experience in this.
I've overclocked 7 toasters with this method.

DFE =! LN2
LN2 is still dangerous as an asphyxiant and the obvious body part freezing/frostbite.

I do hope you're using a proper LN2 pot, mounted to the chipset - and not just dumping it on the device?
I'll give you a pro tip, use plenty of Vaseline to protect against condensation. Cover the whole board, it's a great insulator.
Yeah, used a huge dewar and lowered it in over the course of 5 minutes or so. The vaseline trick is genuis! I ended up using a dehumidifier in a fume cupboard, but that would've been a much better idea. :smile:
