My friend knows basically nothing about buying/using computers and his laptop took a trip to broken town this weekend, so he turned to me. I've always been in the desktop game myself, so I decided I'd take it to you folks to recommend the best laptop out there for his price range.
Is used okay? You can get some really top notch off lease business Lenovo Thinkpad T420's in that budget. I just picked one up in it's in nearly new condition, has an i5, and will come with 4 or 8gb of RAM.
As Levelog says, I like T420s as well as the high-end HP 8460p in that budget. Do get one with a 1600x900 screen though.

Nice laptop for 250 only ! :P
Asus have been questionable when it comes to build quality.
I'd still recommend t420s over anything
not really. Asus are still pretty good.

The laptop you linked has an anemic Celeron N2830 that gets a third of the passmark score an i5-2520m does, 15.6" 1366x768 screen, chiclet keyboard, 3-cell non-removable battery, comparatively little aftermarket support and parts compared to a T420, RAM maxed out at 4GB...
Asus laptops now are shit, practically everything is soldered down in their cheaper stuff and batteries are internal.
Get an ex-corporate HP elitebook.
