Hey, sorry if this doesnt go here. Seemed like the right place. I was wondering if anyone out there could help me figure out how to overclock my computer.
I have a Dell Inspiron 560 Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E6700 3.20Ghz, I replaced the standard 4gb of RAM with 8gb and i have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics card installed and a ModXstream-pro power supply. its model is OCZ600MXSP. so if anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.
OEM Motherboards and overclocking don't usually mix well
You won't be able to overclock a dell. Their BIOS doesn't have the features needed.
Thanks guys. thats what i was afraid of. i couldnt find it on boot in the bios menu.
The only thing you really can do is put a better CPU in there.
If you wanted to upgrade, the best CPUs you could put in your machine would be an E8600 (3.33 GHz/1333 MHz FSB/6M Cache) which would be 5-25% better depending on the application, or a Q9650 (3.0 GHz/1333 MHz FSB/12M Cache) which would be less, but you'd have more cores for multitasking.
Both CPUs weren't produced in quantity and fetch prices similar to what new CPUs cost. It'd be much cheaper to just build a new rig.
As others have said here, you can't overclock with an OEM motherboard. However, there are some CPUs that can be overclocked using simple mods. I remember there being a mod for the Q6600 where you could put electrical tape over one of the pin pads, and it would clock up to 3ghz. You couldn't adjust the voltage or anything though, so there was no guarantee it would be stable. Not sure if that kind of thing exists for the E6700. Juding by a quick google search, it doesn't look like it, so you're either going to have to get a new motherboard, or a new CPU.
