I think it's a decent idea. A lot of people don't know what to expect of Destiny, it's a badly defined game and people throw a lot of buzzwords around. That way, people can take a look at it and get a good feeling for it.
Although that might be misleading, the gameplay itself is absolutely great but the structure around and content is pretty bad.

But from the publishers view point I don't see why they would take the time and money to make a demo so far after release.
Its a nice gesture, but a weird one.
