Alright, I'm currently on an old Pentium D 3GHZ, and I'm planning to upgrade for the newer games, since it already lags when there are more than 10 people in Prototype or worse.
I'm planning on getting this, but I'm not sure if it's that good or not. I know very little about this stuff, so I'll just post what I know here.
Apparently, the chipset is an Intel 945P and the motherboard has a LGA 775 socket and a max FSB speed of 1066mhz (Not sure what this is also)
Will my current motherboard support it and is the processor good? I'm on a quite small budget so can't get too good processors, and I don't plan on upgrading the motherboard too unless it's cheap.
It is unlikely that it will support that CPU, since it is 45nm and your motherboard was designed for 65nm CPUs. Look up the CPU compatibility list for your motherboard (google is your friend). You'd be better off with getting something like an E6400 or 6600, since your motherboard will support it.
i found a guide on youtube about how to get a i5 working on lga775 you should check it out

why on earth would i get a ban? search it on youtube, youll find it there. not my problem if its "impossible"
Did it involve a hammer? Or maybe a shoehorn...

i5 is 1156, different pin setup than 775. I know your trolling me but I mine as well explain to the OP the pins probably physically wont fit.
Most obvious troll in a while.

You know, I actually never ever thought of that. Thanks 404, I'll look for one of those instead. It should also be at least better than a Pentium D, right?
And of course, I'm sure that an i5 won't work on my old 2005 motherboard.
EDIT
In case I ever think of upgrading motherboards, which one of these will be good? Anything better than this will cost me a bomb (Those 1366 or something) and I probably won't buy it. In any case, if I ever buy one of those motherboards, will it be easy to install / have anything to look out for which may not work with the new motherboard?
Any of those motherboards will be fine, I'd go for the Gigabyte ones that suit your budget. An i5 750 will run fine, much better than your current CPU, but keep in mind you'll need to buy DDR3 RAM to go along with it.
Also, what is your graphics card? That might also be a bottleneck.
Graphics card is an ATI Radeon 3650. Bought it last year, was actually looking for a 8600GT, but they were out of stock and this was buckets cheaper. Thanks for your help too.
