Ok, I got Metro 2033 as a gift from a fellow FP'er, but I can't get it to work.
I tried everything that was listed in the Steam Support Forums, I even had another FP'er use Team Viewer on my PC to help me, but nothing helped.
I've installed all the files in the /install folder of Metro 2033, still nothing. I tried running in windowed mode, still nothing.
It can't be my computer because every other game runs fine and with no problems. I contacted 4A studios, and no answer from them.
Help, please.
Tell us the problem other than "it doesnt work". Dialog boxes, errors etc.

It launches saying 'The last launch was unsuccessful, launch in Safe Mode?' clicking yes doesn't help, when it launches it gets to the welding 4a logo, and crashes halfway through. The error bar says Metro 2033 executable has stopped working. After that windows checks for a solution and finds nothing.
Verify integrity of game cache, update video drivers, make sure you have all the latest windows updates including the latest service pack and try running the directx web installer http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
Yeah, the crash usually means that you don't have software installed to play the game. If you received the retail version, I'd suggest to go to the redist folder of the disc and install all the included software. You should also install DirectX, your latest video card drivers, microsoft visual and etc.
One more thing, are you running on a laptop? I had lots of trouble making the game work on my brother's high-end notebook.
Does your hardware support Directx 10 or 11? I had a similar problem with STALKER Call of Pripyat, it would try to start up in DX10 mode even though I was on XP and my hardware didn't support it. I had to go into the game files and change some line manually, but I don't know where the files would be for Metro.
Ok, so I found the error log for the crash. So I guess it would be of more help to you guys than just 'it doesn't work'

I'm using a desktop computer, and I got the game as a gift on steam from another FP'er.
I installed all the updates that were in the Metro2033/install directory, I updated my video drivers, verified game cache, I did everything that was ever done to try and launch the game, but nothing helps.
