• Monitor Dilemma: Triple vs Large single?

Soon I am setting up a new desk in my room of which I can fit an extremely large desk in. I probably will not be using my current monitor since it is damaged. What I am having trouble deciding is what exact setup to go for, here are some of the options. All are at 1920x1080: 1x 27" Iiyama B2712HDS - £270 1x 27" Iiyama B2712HDS + 2x 18.5" BenQ (1366x768) G925HDA Portrait screens - £410 3x 21.5" BenQ E2220HD 1920x1080 £360 3x 23" Samsung SyncMaster 2333T (Slower response time/less ports than BenQ) £375 3x 24" BenQ G2420HDBE £420 I'm currently thinking a single 27" may be the best option as I would also be able to use it for watching movies, etc.
Personally I think a large screen like a 27" along with a smaller portrait is a great setup. But if you have the funds and desk space then I'd go for your second option.
What about the last option?
I say get a 27 inch with a larger resolution than 1080p... [editline]13th January 2011[/editline] I don't really know any good UK retailers, though.
Personally I'd kill for a triple 24" setup, compared to a single 27" setup. But that's just me and my personal preferences. I'd recommend experimenting with some older monitors, so you can see if multi monitor setups really are for you.
1x 27" Iiyama B2712HDS + 2x 18.5" BenQ (1366x768) G925HDA Portrait screens - £410 [editline]13th January 2011[/editline] http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ie/en/ho/WF06b/382087-382087-3284302-215012-215012-3989902-4085951.html
It really depends if you're gaming or not and your preferences, really. I prefer pixel density over size, so I'd just get a single 22 inch, but I've always wanted a triple monitor setup, I can imagine 3 monitors not looking great if they're not the same physically.

[editline]13th January 2011[/editline] I could also get a 1920x1080 32" TV for about £260 but then the pixel density might be a bit too high.

I'd go with a larger single display and a (small) vertical second. 27-30" primary and a 19-20" ultra-widescreen would be my ideal setup. Rational: I like to have a large spread of stuff in front of me on a single flat surface when coding, working, etc, and then have an auxiliary view for my terminal sessions (irssi, ssh, alpine, etc)
I had a triple screen set up for a few weeks but went back to dual. The cons outweigh the pros for me. Triple monitor gaming isn't That great, novelty value wears off REALLY quick. If anything 3 screens made me less productive than 2 (Which I find more productive than 1) Glad I borrowed a monitor rather than bought one. Consider this another vote for Large single.
If you are gaming, I suggest getting a large single and one portrait. Game on the large single and save the portrait for web browsing and stuff.
If you are gaming, I suggest getting a large single and one portrait. Game on the large single and save the portrait for web browsing and stuff.
Or you could just browse on the large one because you aren't going to be gaming and web browsing at the same time.
Or you could just browse on the large one because you aren't going to be gaming and web browsing at the same time.
Loading screens/ waiting to respawn.
Loading screens/ waiting to respawn.
Add game to Steam if you don't have it on Steam and use the in-game browser, also, clicking and trying to browse on another monitor would cause your game to minimize unless the game supports no border windowed mode which is dumb anyway because it lowers your framerate. And if you need to browse the Internet while loading you shouldn't have such a monitor setup anyway. Respawns are never over 30 seconds so why? [editline]13th January 2011[/editline] just dumb
I found that I never used my second screen when I had one, even when programming. I just have a single 27" monitor now and that works for me personally.
If you are gaming, I suggest getting a large single and one portrait. Game on the large single and save the portrait for web browsing and stuff.
This is what i do when im playing RTS games or turn based ones or when im dead in ttt in gmod
Ajacks had a great triple monitor setup, with one large screen centered, and a portrait on either side.
no border windowed mode which is dumb anyway because it lowers your framerate
no it doesn't
If it does I certainly haven't noticed it. I do however notice frame drops just from extending my desktop into a second screen, but only minimal ones.
Do what I did: Buy one big ass 60" tv :v: It is fucking heaven.
Friend used to use a 30" monitor and I loved it as long as your not to close to it other wise it is just ridiculous
1 wide screen monitor would float my boat just fine. :v: though i can understand why people actually need additional monitors for whatever multitasking purposes.
21.5" 27" 21.5" In that setup, it is amazing.
Triple monitor. No question. Once you use multiple monitors you can't go back.
Could you tell me the advantages of having triple monitors (22" or 24") of the same size/type over having 1x 27" and two 18/19" monitors in portrait?

The biggest (27") will be used for gaming. When not gaming you can use First small monitor for a browser, center monitor (biggest) for a text editor/IDE/whatever, third monitor can be used for misc stuff like Steam, IRC, music program.
I can't see the advantage of a triple monitor setup over a dual monitor setup. Furthermore, you need to factor in the cost of an additional low end video card to drive that third monitor (admittedly not much, but could be a bit of a dealbreaker if you've somehow managed to fill up most of your slots already). You also wouldn't reap the benefit of 1080 on a 24"+ monitor unless you're sitting a fair distance away from it. Currently using a 21" 1920x1080 monitor and a 19" 1440x900 monitor. Portrait monitors are good fun, but my secondary is back to landscape now.
Depending on your motherboard you can use the onboard video to drive the third screen.
no it doesn't
Uh yes it does actually because if you're using 7 or Vista it's rendering Explorer, and if you have Aero enabled it will drop your framerate.
