So in 3 weeks about I'm flying to Cali to see visit my mother and family, I was just wondering if i could get my computer tower past airport security? I'm pretty sure i can make it under the 50 pounds mark.
Thanks in advance

The TSA will open it up, search it, and tear it apart.
If you put it in your checked luggage, I think so, but shouldn't you spend time with your family instead of playing games on your computer that you feel the need to bring with you? Or just bring a laptop if you have one?
That a bad thing?

Pft, ill be there for a month, I need my baby!!!!!
No bombs= no worry
Security wise, that's likely although they will probably get it in for closer inspection.
However, i'm not sure if the airline will let you take something of that size as hand luggage as there's a rough size limit as well. We always have these signs with a small metal box attached at the bottom so you can check your hand luggage size - if it fit's in it's okay. I doubt a full desktop PC will fit in there.
Huh.
I never thought about this.

Is it even safe for a tower to pass under an x-ray?
No bombs= no worry
Unless they have no technical experience which I'm sure at least half of them don't.
WOAH WOAH WOAH would the X-ray shit mess it up? I didn't think about that at all.
I doubt it, unless you have a small tower...
Better off just bringing the hardrive
If you want to check it in, i can only advise you not to unless you really make some preparations to it. They litterally throw the baggage around because that's really the most effective way to get it all from A to B in the shortest time.
No bombs= no worry
knives
cutlery
guns
ammo
certain liquids
big shoes (really)
flammable items
etc
It's not a carry on.

So, if i wrap it in bubble wrap and surround it in clothes, it should be fine?
And the X-ray they use is that harmful at all?

I'm not sure how the insides will handle the loading and unloading. I'd imagine a heavy graphics card or cooler could rip off. This is is pretty much how they handle baggage at every major airport:

I don't think the Xray should be a concern.
Lol, shit. Hope he dont drop mine, maybe if I write " fragile" on it they would be more careful xD

Also, I can take the 4870 out of there that's the only thing I'm really worried about. I built it with only $350
Not including the 4870.
I've done this before. I've gotten it through but that was like 5 years ago. It was a huge hassle, but they just opened it up, and took a peek inside. I'm not sure how the TSA would handle it now.
Any time I have electronics shipped to me there's always a big "NO X-RAY" or "VISUAL INSPECTION ONLY" sticker on the box, can everyday people use those for getting something through airport security or are they just for couriers/postal service
Welp thanks, this pretty much wraps up my question.
- Make sure it's safely secured and cushioned properly
- Hope they don't drop it
- take the GPU out and keep that safe
That's all I believe
Facepunch, I love you all!
Cant you just buy a laptop, and return it when you go back?

unless you're going to be using it for gaming.
Judging by me picture, Scout from TF2, you would be able to tell I'm a gamer.
Well if TF2 is that important all you have to do is find a working computer and download steam, log-in, install and play. Cause you know, steam cloud and all.
I don't just play TF2. -3-

wow uh never post agian plz tank u!!!!!!
There's no rules against computer towers, but they're awful big and will cost you more for luggage. They'll probably open your bag and search it after discovering something as unusual as a computer tower, just don't stash your porn in it.
Or do, but make sure it's some really disgusting stuff so they won't search the rest of your luggage. :buddy:
I brought my Graphics card and harddrive on the plane with me before, and it went through the xray and everything. I'm using the same harddrive now and the graphics card worked fine.
I wouldn't dare send a full computer through Baggage. Have you seen how those systems work? I usually just take laptops on planes. Security is not the issue for me, it's the gauntlet of conveyor belts and pneumatic ram systems that some airports have that sometimes pop luggage bags at the seams like balloons.
People bring laptops onto planes all the time and they go through the x-ray fine. So that isn't an issue. The amount of roughing hold luggage goes through though...
Yeah, just do the stuff you listed. Padding and stuff. You could go as far as to insure it if you're that worried about baggage handlers.

Well you sure showed me what how!
Steam Cloud works with games that aren't TF2. Does your family not own a computer? It would be much cheaper and safer to not bring your entire computer on a plane and risk damaging or losing it.
If anything you should ship it out via UPS or FedEx. Less chance of it getting fucked up.
But really, just use a laptop or desktop that your family out there have.
