• External harddrive broken

My friend dropped her usb harddrive the other day. Was gonna go round to try to get it to a state where she could at least recover some files. It doesn't recognise it when it is plugged in, and doesn't have any form of warranty. I'm going round tonight to have a look, but more than likely will end up simply dismantling the enclosure and plugging it strait into the pc. I'll check the circuit board as well for any damage, see if it can be swapped out but from a drop it's more likely to be platter damage right? Anything more I can do? Obviously sending it away is a no go as it costs a bomb.
