GMDL, Which is INGENIOUSLY named by me, lets you easily compile GMOD models.

IT IS WINDOWS ONLY!
A while ago, I made a thread on how to easily compile GMOD models, but it is a little to complicated.
I heavily simplified it, but downloading it is a bit complicated :)
1. Create a directory named GMDL (preferably on the desktop)

2. Run GMDL.exe

3. You'll see this :) Click "Browse"

4. Navigate to the folder you made earlier

5. Click OK twice

6. Click OK to dismiss the message

7. Move the folder to C:/Program Files (x86)/

8. Move GMDL to your desktop

9. You have installed it! Great job! Just one more step...

10. If you want to use it, drag your compile.qc onto the program at ANY TIME!

Get it here: http://download1650.mediafire.com/3zn1b5ksl15g/wgcbs6zym4j53cp/GMDL.EXE
You know you can just put it in a zip and people can just extract that right? Why make people fuck around with a self extractor when zips are built in to the OS and nearly everyone has either 7zip or WinRAR.
This isn't the rust forum so I suspect people probably don't actually need to be told how to press "OK."
Alternatively just replace the whole post with this code tag:
"C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/GarrysMod/bin/studiomdl.exe" -game "C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/SteamApps/common/garrysmod/garrysmod/" -nop4 -nox360 %1
pause
This reduces the file size by 1365x by not including an icon or unnecessary self extractors.
Self extractor: 234 kb, extracted files: 145 kb, 7zip: 76 kb, the actual batch file: 174 bytes.
Why do I care.
[editline]20th October 2015[/editline]
Also this doesn't work unless steam is installed to C: and so is garry's mod, this doesn't work at all on my computer or anyone else who has an SSD and doesn't think garrys mod needs to be on it.

Ok, point taken.
But- I did point out in the begging that it is windows only, number one.
Number two- this just makes it look better and quite frankly some people are just to.... "ungifted" to do this admittedly simple thing.
Number three- It's hard to compile otherwise. And also, don't .bat files just look so ugly?
Number four- The code represented in your post ALSO doesn't work unless it is installed to C:/
:)
No offense

Also, 234kb is NOTHING.

Well, yeah - it's copied directly from your batch file.
Well, yeah - it's copied directly from your batch file.
Which means your point was invalid :)
I'm sure I've seen this somewhere else...
Edit:
Oh, wait, you posted the same thing a week ago in the Modelling section
Edit:
It seems this one is a 'little' better

Not really, it only points out the fact that you convoluted this thing to hell and back.

Honestly, that "line of code" isn't for the "gifted" at all. I've known how to do this shit since I was 11 and I'm just a mapper.

Fucking, should've just hit edit.
Damnit
Reread it...

Ungifted - not gifted. This doesn't mean those with below average intelligence; this means those who aren't extra intelligent.

honestly if you're fucking around with self extractors, icons and what else, you should save yourself the trouble and make a sublimetext build snippet or notepad++ builder, which lets you compile directly from a text editor of your choice without having to drag and drop with the press of a button. Unless you're actually using barebones notepad for complex Qc scripts, in which case apage I say, apage.
As to a cmd window from a batch script. Sure it looks like something from the ninetees but unless you're compiling an incredibly heavy model, you're not going to see the window for more than a minute. And you get all the important information in there.
As to the post and the batch file - yes it doesn't work if studiomdl isn't in the exact location, but so doesn't yours if you don't have stuff in c:\progfilesx86 (at least I presume that's the case, else why would you be moving stuff to there at first)
Not to mention your compiler lacks togleability between compiler versions (gmod and sfm are important, particularly when compiling models with +128 bones) and it only compiles into the gmod directory as opposed to something more sensible like a mod directory which you have junctioned into the addon folder.
EDIT
Seems like you just included the standard batchfile anyway and don't actually have any checks to see if steam is in the default location. Nor do you ever mention that it only works for the default location. That can cause a lot of frustration.
Imagine coming across people who have steam installed in different folders, like me.
"E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life 2\bin\studiomdl" -game "E:\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods\test" %1
GOTO CUT
"H:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\SourceFilmmaker\game\bin\studiomdl" -game "H:\Games\Steam\steamapps\SourceMods\test" %1
:CUT
pause
Sorry guys, but I think that most people have their things installed in C:/....
(Bump :P)

There's a saying here - thinking is knowing shit.
I do recommend, that if you keep working on this tool, you create a chance for the user to specify the location of studioMDL, maybe even work in a switch for different ones (SFM, CSGO, GMOD) as well as a compile location.
I don't think I can trust downloading anything from a user with a Minecraft avatar.

The other option is to polish your stuff to NOT make assumptions. I mean you have all you need right there in the registry. Not only that, but you need to be able to accept criticism and not defend broken design. You won't make fans by attacking or shutting down the very people who may use your 'product'.
That's what separates people who dabble in modding from people who get hired in the industry (Or any computer related industry for that matter).
Which is INGENIOUSLY named by me
I also want to add that you're not Steve Jobs. Work on your presentation and try your hardest not to boast and you'll make more fans in the long run. Keep things simple, clean, and concise. Include the version number and changelog, and make it prominent. Less is more, especially if you're young or just starting out. Do not make your own extractor.
Preferably, if starting out small, include the source code as well.
I would also suggest finding a better host. Github perhaps? Never use MediaFire, RapidShare, or any of the other random file hosts for things like this.
Also, 234kb is NOTHING.
Meet .kkrieger, the 96KB first person shooter with realtime shadows, multiple enemies, multiple weapons, and a large map with single player campaign and boss battle.
No excuses for bloat. Your app is larger than what's required and that's something you can fix (And should when you have nothing else to work on in it).

(Bump :P)
This is generally frowned upon across this entire forum. I would refrain from doing it again. Both the bump and the smiley.
Take what I've said as honest advice from experience rather than a personal attack; I'm here to help.

Ok, but that- my good sir, was a joke.
Anyone can take GMOD and smash MDL into it.

(Hence the capitalization)
So you copy and pasted a command from someone else, stuck it in a self-extracting archive, and consider yourself all ~intelligent~? All the while ignoring or even fighting any criticism? And bump this thread after 3 months for no reason?
Go find another forum, kid.
Sorry, you need to Log In to post a reply to this thread.
