• Booting straight to startup repair
    6 replies, posted
So, I recently got back from a few weeks trip home, and when I got back I brought my computer out of hibernation mode and everything worked perfectly fine, no issues to be seen. Then it locked up for a few seconds, and I decided to give it a reboot. Upon rebooting it, I was greeted with the dread "windows is loading files", and was sent straight to windows startup repair, which failed. I've tried doing the repair something like 12 times now, and nothing seems to have worked. Here are some potentially helpful numbers and letters. (Sorry for camera pictures, obviously I can't really take screenshots right now) [t]http://i.imgur.com/FVwNjpt.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/czHolC9.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/N9nRYgM.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/xGH0wv8.jpg[/t] Now, I do have an image that I took just before I left, it's on an external hard drive, however, I have no idea how to boot to it from the startup repair thing. I could do it from the regular boot screen, but it's very unclear on this. It gives me the option to install a driver for a drive that isn't showing up (the drive doesn't) but according to my google searches, the HD I use doesn't have any drivers, it's just plug and go or some shit. I can get on to the drive, because it lets me search for a driver there, but I can't just directly select my .vhd file. I also have a system restore point from the day I left, but when I attempt to use it, it fails, telling me that it can't restore because it can't find some file relating to CS:GO or some shit. (I'll post a picture of that once I can get it up again, it spends almost a half hour deciding that it won't work.) Here's some system restore stuff about scanning for affected something or other [t]http://i.imgur.com/vpDd7BH.jpg[/t] [t]http://i.imgur.com/ucQXGFP.jpg[/t] Hopefully someone has some idea what any of this means, I'll post a picture of the system restore failure page when it's done failing. Thanks for your time! [editline]asdflkj[/editline] This is what I get when it finishes not working with system restore. Also, the window isn't large enough to read the entire message, but I can't enlarge it. :I [t]http://i.imgur.com/8qUjV3l.jpg[/t]
It looks like there's corrupted files or something of the sort. Can you boot into safe mode by pressing f8 after POST? If you can get into safe mode, open command prompt and type sfc /scannow
I was able to press f8 and select safemode with command prompt, but it just sent me directly to system repair again, and failed. I tried selecting the command prompt option from the startup repair window, and it gave me this. [t]http://i.imgur.com/186ivSP.jpg[/t] I restarted and tried it again, and it gave me the same thing
Get back to the command prompt and run Chkdsk c: /r Note that this may take a few hours to finish. As indicated by the system restore message, there's probably bad sectors on your drive. Its also one of the few causes of that "Startup Repair Offline" error.
God damnit, I can't even get to command prompt now because halfway through "Windows is loading files" it gives me this. [t]http://i.imgur.com/8vPLaUI.jpg[/t] and makes this noise I'm going to assume that that means my hard drive is physically damaged and I have no hope for fixing this.
Yep. That sounds pretty fucked to me. If you want to get data off, you could try putting the hard drive in a moisture-free airtight bag, and sticking it in the freezer for a while, and trying to get the data off of it while it's still cold. For some reason that seems to work with physically damaged hard drives sometimes. It might not work and you might not get everything but if you have stuff you don't want to lose, you can try that. If it fails, oh well, the drive was dead anyways. What's it matter. Crack it open and wreak havoc on it while it's plugged in. :v: (Not entirely serious about that last bit)
Alright, thanks for the help guys!
