Hey, so I'm planning on getting a job this semester and I kind of want to try being a late night delivery driver. Has anyone here done this and if so what are your thoughts? I do want a job where I can meet new people and I'm thinking as a driver you'd be on your own a lot of the time. Do you still meet people as a driver? All in all is it an ok job?
what exactly are you delivering [editline]23rd July 2015[/editline] come hit me up i need some crystal
If you do a lot of driving invest in some audiobooks, or you'll get very bored of the same music. I do around 32,000 miles a year as a service engineer.
I delivered papers at 3:30 am, and my route was full of pissy old folks who called my sleep deprived boss to call my sleep deprived self to complain that I did not leave their paper exactly on their doorstep even though it's a collasol pain in my ass to stop at each house and deliver the paper to every fucking door and every other route has roadside boxes except mine.... Pros: blasting rock music at 4:00am in an empty town, being able to disregard all traffic rules as this is an empty town, being done with work at 7 am Cons: worried about being shot as its a town in the country, 3am wakeup call, angry 7 am wakeup calls, being waterlogged every day attack dew, the fucking heat, the fucking rain, having to work 7 days a week with no time off, when the paper screws up its my fault even if they really really screw up, did I mention sleep deprivation? [editline]23rd July 2015[/editline] If you're doing driving or delivery you won't have time to pay attention to stuff other than your job especially if you are under a deadline, you won't have time to mess around with audio books
used to help deliver newspapers at 5 in the morning to commercial buildings and shit, so I guess I have some form of experience. it's obviously gonna be boring, depending on when you work. keep a music player near you, like a phone or something, because relying on the radio is gonna get boring. and you better enjoy driving in general, because depending on what you're delivering, your car is gonna be your new best friend. and since you're working late night, I'd suggest adjusting sleep hours because you'll be dead exhausted when you're done. also, if you're delivering in a big city, you're gonna have to be ready for anything really. I'd suggest keeping your car doors locked and being cautious of the road because when you get tired it'll be harder to drive, so keep shifting your eyes while driving to keep attention on the road. depending on what you deliver, the only time you'll meet people is if you're delivering to a business that operates late-night. I used to deliver to this one hotel that had the same bellhop come out and help unload the papers so they could be brought inside, so I guess it's possible to meet people, but more than likely you won't see a lot of people outside due to the time.
