Becoming a salesman.. What kind of pay should I be expecting?

So I got this job as a salesman for a cable company (shaw cable) and the pay is purely commission. So basically i make what i'm worth to the company.
I asked the guy who interviewed me and gave me the job and he said most average people start out making 500 a week and move up from anywhere from 600 to 1000 every week.
I'm just kind of nervous he's pulling my chain here and luring me in because he's getting paid to do so. Should I actually be expecting 500 a week starting out when my pay is based purely off of the commission of what I sell? I'm not worrying that i won't make any sales or anything i'm just wondering what to expect JUST starting off at the bottom of the barrel.
They have a list of people who have recently moved here, have never used shaw before, or dislike shaw. I call and meet all these people face to face and get them to switch cable companys.
Anyone who has a history with this kind of job and has some input i'd greatly appreciate it.
I made ~$1400-$1800 per week working on commission as a telemarketer for Nexus Modelling, it can be an OK job if you're used to dealing with dumb people.
Depends on the company really. I forget the name of it but there is one company that tries to reach high school graduates by convincing them to sell knives. You will make almost no money with them. The only people who buy from you are your friends and family and that is only because they feel bad for you.
If you're going door-to-door, expect door slams as your pay.
Telemarketing? "Fuck You" and a hangup is your pay.
And you better not call my ass.
Nobody smart does door-to-door stuff anymore, the payout-to-time ratio is super low in almost all cases.
