# I created this thread again because I didn't realise there is a glitch which causes threads with .'s in their titles to be unreachable from the forum section. Hopefully the other one will be noticed and deleted. Sorry. The link: http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1120747-Unable-to-access-download.microsoft.com?p=31985616 # Here's the original post: Basically as the title says, I can't download things from Microsoft (as all downloads come from download.microsoft.com). If I try and ping it, it says 'Ping request could not find host download.microsoft.com. Please check the name and try again.' Other PCs in the house can access it (one running Windows Vista, one running Windows XP, and one running Windows 2000). This PC is running Windows 7 Professional 64. I have tried changing the preferred DNS in my Wireless Connection's IPv4 settings to say, Google's (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) but this did not fix the issue. If I do nslookup download.microsoft.com (using 'Obtain DNS server address automatically'), I get the following output: Server: login.router Address: 192.168.1.1 DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. DNS request timed out. timeout was 2 seconds. *** Request to login.router timed-out I would like to point out here that I can ping login.router just fine. I have also edited the hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc and added the line "92.123.153.49 download.microsoft.com". The IP address was provided by a friend. I can ping that IP address. Unfortunately, this did not fix the issue either. Further points - when I am at University I can access download.microsoft.com. When I reinstalled my operating system in the past a couple of times to try and fix the issue, it didn't. I've finally resolved to try and fix this issue again once and for all as I am at home currently. This issue is extremely annoying, and any advice on how to fix it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
There shouldn't be anything in the hosts file, it's there to redirect an IP to a different address
Use Google's Public DNS.
Not being able to access the Microsoft website is sometimes an indication of spyware/malware on your computer. Are you able to access any common antivirus sites like McAfee or Symantec? If you can't then that would confirm it.
I can access anti-virus websites like the ones you mention above without any apparent issues.
