So yesterday I got a new computer that I had wiped and rebooted with a new Windows 7 installation. Now I'm letting it find new Windows updates. So far its been around ~3-4 hours and it hasn't found a single update. I don't want to have it run all night and overheat it, nor do I want to put it in some sort of sleep mode and lose track of it finding updates. Am I doomed to wait for what seems like an eternity for it to finally find and install updates?

Yep, common problem for Windows Update. I wish there was a way to download all the updates into one pack and save it so you don't have to wait as long
Time to suck it up then. Good thing I had the fans, cooling parts, and motherboard cleaned up before leaving it on. Going to leave it on all night and give an update.
This is actually a super common issue and it's not unheard of it to take days instead of hours. I've seen it first hand. I'd say give it a day and see what it does, but if it doesn't seem to get anywhere then follow the steps here.
It's a glitch with the Windows Update service. It conveniently started plaguing every Windows 7 machine that I reinstalled Windows on at my job after Windows 10 was officially released.

I had this problem with my installation too. Fortunately, to remedy this, windows put out something called like a "rollup service pack" or something. It's a thing you can DL that you run and it just stuffs all the needed updates onto your thing at once, so you're caught up. I can't really remember what it's called but it was super useful.

In short - no. Microsoft released a fix for this, but of course it will take windows update forever to find the fix for you. However, you can do it manually, look at the top answer here: http://superuser.com/questions/951960/windows-7-sp1-windows-update-stuck-checking-for-updates
snip. I'm dumb the link was already posted previously aaaa

This is the only solution. It will actually take two literal days (48 hours) to fully patch Windows 7 from the official SP1 disc ISO.
It was fucking maddening until I started using that site.
Just installed Windows 7 recently with the same issue, and using those rollup updates posted around (KB3020369, KB3172605, and KB3185278) did the trick for me. The update service through svchost was just stalling out before, but then after using those three updates, it was installing all the updates within a couple of minutes. Still took about an hour to download and install them, but much better than it being stuck on checking for updates forever.

I tried this and it also took forever to load, so I did it manually instead. There was a reddit thread on it and I did all of those steps, then used http://www.wsusoffline.net/
When you use the patch metallics posted, make sure you kill the wuauserv and bits services before installing it.
After the patch is in windows update will be waaaaaay less painful.
Thanks for the advice guys, but after 3 days of waiting, it found all of my updates this afternoon! I had them all installed, and restarted my computer at least 2 times and made sure that there were no more updates to install and everything was installed properly. I can finally run this beast of a desktop!
Yes, there is a bug in the Windows Updater for W7 that has been acknowledged for years now. The symptom is taking unnecessarily long to check for updates. In your case it was 3 days :v:
Since you just updated, Windows Updater patched itself along the way, so you'll never get that problem again.
On the other hand, for future reference, there is a manual hotfix for this WU bug available on MSDN.
