Please read this entire post before responding. Sometime in the future I'll be holding another competition. The USB Mod Competition was a slight success, but I'm looking for something better. Suggest and discuss competition themes here. Don't flame someone about their idea unless you have a better one. :siren: Ideas that won't be considered: :siren: • Case Mod • Cable Management • Anything expensive • Anything involving hardware that isn't easily accessible by all :siren: Ideas that have been considered: :siren: •Alternate uses for computer hardware •Underclocking Prize will be a 7200rpm SATA 250GB HDD with a molex for power. Suggest away!
i know! who can make a one minute video with the most batman in it! only joking... underclocking all the way!
a prize for suggesting something? Fastest way to melt a CPU / MB / Some component thats cheep ish Do something with PSU non computer related Cheep water cooling while looking good? I have more ideas but i need to take a shower Something to do with fans ( they are cheep! ) Fan light show? cool webcam mounts / hiders ?
Best poem based around a 7200RPM Sata 250GB HDD.

Making a hip and cool fashion accessory out of an old computer part?
I nominate underclocking, that shit will be so fun.
I like the new uses for old technology/alternate uses for computer hardware idea. Mainly because I don't know anything about over/underclocking.
how about hobo rig? whoever has the most ghetto computer wins. I could totally win that with my dumpster dell case
That doesn't require much skill or creativity though, that would just be a contest of who's lucky/unlucky enough to have a shit computer.... (I say unlucky for those who's main computer is the 10 year old piece of junk.)
not worst, just most ghetto. ie mine has pretty nice hardware but I got the optical drives and case out of a dumpster
Again, I put my support behind the underclocking one, everyone is able to do it safely
Underclocking sounds fun, but so does ghetto-rig. Either or.
how about hobo rig? whoever has the most ghetto computer wins. I could totally win that with my dumpster dell case
I think my beige Sony desktop I found in a back alley will put your entry down pretty quickly :3:
Idea: Build your own case. Like, from scratch. Home Depot-type stuff. Whoever's looks the best wins.
Idea: Build your own case. Like, from scratch. Home Depot-type stuff. Whoever's looks the best wins.
That's a neat idea but this is Facepunch and no one is motivated enough. Just look how much people whined about buying a $10 USB drive.
how about hobo rig? whoever has the most ghetto computer wins. I could totally win that with my dumpster dell case
Again, a fantastic idea. However, that's a really broad topic and is subject to creep.
who can get their CPU the coldest. Like personally I would use a old PIII junker I have.
who can get their CPU the coldest.
That's easy. Put it back in the box it came in, leave it outside overnight. Bam - instant 5C below. Oh, you meant while it's running?
How about something like, who can run a specific Windows application while having the smallest possible amount of space taken up on their hard drive. Like, say you have to strip all the crap out of Windows XP, and still be able to browse Facepunch on Internet Explorer. The winner is the person with the smallest amount of space taken up on the their harddrive. It could even be done in a VM. Ties in the with the prize too (which personally, I could really use because I only have 200gb of storage :frown:)

I wish I knew how to do that.... But it sounds good. What happens if you strip out the ability to determine how much space is being taken up? (I don't actually think that is possible.)

I have an old Win98 disc that would be much better at downsizing.
I'm not making the rules specifically :v:. XP would probably be fairer because more people will own a copy of it. I'd suggest Linux but hardly anyone (myself included) really knows their way around it, and it would be more of a fun challenge to strip stuff out of Windows than build up a light Linux install from scratch.

Underclock my old PC 1.25GHz AMD Athlon. Okay, no problemo. HDD Speakers? Fastest mouse clicker? Underclocking ONLY CPU(!) under 800MHz and having fan and heatsink propely installed and able to get a temperature over 80C. Fan speed must be correct, not made slower.
build/find the slowest computer you can and underclock to fuck. [editline]11th November 2010[/editline] Get the slowest 3DMark score possible?
If everyone keeps saying underclocking, this could be interesting. I have a Pentium II computer sitting at home collecting dust...
If we were to do an underclocking competition, there'd have to be some sort of test to see who's computer is slowest in the end...
If we were to do an underclocking competition, there'd have to be some sort of test to see who's computer is slowest in the end...
It's not the slowest pc competition, it's the smallest clock value, just validate cpuz and post it here, showing the underclock.
If everyone keeps saying underclocking, this could be interesting. I have a Pentium II computer sitting at home collecting dust...
I've got a PII-based Celeron I could use. Although the Athlon might be better at underclocking. I'll try both if that's the competition.
