Windows 7 is the next Minor Release operating system from Microsoft. Windows 7 is designed to be more touch friendly, natural, compatible, and overall easier to use.

Windows 7 brings some new exciting features to make your everyday tasks easier, more fun, and more productive. Windows 7 includes:
• Less demanding system requirements
• Improved touch support
• Improved taskbar
• "Jump lists"
• "Device stage"
• "Homegroups"
• Internet Explorer 8
• Windows Media Player 12
• Updated standard programs (Paint, calculator, wordpad, etc.)
• More eye candy
Each of the next sections will go over these new features in more detail.
• Less demanding system requirements
Windows 7 requires less computing power to run well compared to Windows Vista. It was designed with netbooks in mind, which are hardly the most powerful computers out there. For both old and new computers alike, windows 7 is the perfect choice.
• Improved touch support
Windows 7 was also designed with touch capable computers in mind. Internet explorer now has touch features, the windows shell has touch features, like shaking a window to minimize all other open windows, sliding programs around on the superbar, jump lists by pulling up on a superbar icon, etc. The superbar itself is large for fingers to be able to touch it.
• Improved taskbar
The taskbar in Windows 7 has been redesigned for simplicity, better touch support, and makes it easier to find what you're looking for. Open windows/programs are now organized in blocks. Putting your mouse over a block in the taskbar will open a live preview box. Putting your mouse over this box will turn all other windows transparent except the one you have your mouse over. Clicking it will switch to that window or program.

• "Jump lists"
Jump lists are lists that let you find recent documents easier. Say you have wordpad pinned to your taskbar. Simply drag up on the icon, and a list will appear. This list has recent documents, things you can do with wordpad, and more. In the start menu there are also jump lists, represented by an arrow next to an icon. Click on this arrow to have the program's jump list appear.
• "Device stage"
"Device Stage" is a welcome center of sorts for your devices. Plugging in your camera, for example, will open a center that can help you get your pictures off the camera, show you battery status, etc.

• "HomeGroups"
Homegroups are literally groups at home. You can group computers together at home to share music, programs, pictures, and more.
• Internet Explorer 8
Internet Explorer 8 has been updated with "Accelerators" (Things that allow you to select text and blog it, search it, and more.), touch support, and a cleaner UI.
• Windows Media Player 12
Windows Media Player has been given a new UI, better album grouping, and a new minimode. That's it.
• Updated standard programs
Paint, Wordpad, and similar programs have been updated to include the "Ribbon" interface from Microsoft Office 2007. Paint has more painting features, and Wordpad has more typing features. Wordpad now supports open office documents, too.
• Eye candy
Windows 7 has a new light blue and orange theme. Programs in the taskbar now light up when you mouse over them based on their dominant color. Windows animate smoother when minimizing and maximizing. The start menu now changes between many modes with smooth animations.
• Games
If you have a touchscreen capable computer, your manufacturer may include a few new touch games from microsoft. If you don't, all premium versions will still get some new games, such as updated versions of online games from Windows XP/ME.
MEDIA

The official public testing session has ended. Windows 7 is finished and RTM has been completed. Downloading build 7600 from torrent sites is illegal now. The RC is no longer available, but the keys are.
Tweaks:
Fix for the ugly fonts that occur on Facepunch for the "X Reading" under the thread titles:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
FontSmoothing = 2
FontSmoothingType = 3
Fixes:

Does your volume go down when you open a game?
Right click on the sound icon and go to playback devices. Click the communications tab. Then click "Do nothing".
Creating custom content for the welcome center
A few people PM'd me about how to make the extra sections in the welcome center. Simply open up c:\windows\system32\oobefldr.dll with ResHacker or any other resource editor and export the XML file. Edit in a section like this to the end before the </tasks> tag.
<task id="{E97AF2A4-8422-49C1-8B4C-68B8AE925549}" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/windows/tasks/v1">
<name>[Title that shows up in the list]</name>
<destTitle>[Title that shows up in the Jump List (Doesn't work)]</destTitle>
<icon>c:\OEM\Welcome Center\YourIcon.ico</icon>
<description />
<command>[Website URL or Program .exe location]</command>
<sortPriority>[Enter a number from 1-999 to set the priority]</sortPriority>
<infotip>[Title that shows up in the list]</infotip>
<previewPaneView xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/windows/oobetasks/v1">
<previewBackground>[Image background for the top - Must be a .jpg]</previewBackground>
<startText>[Text that shows up next to the green arrow]</startText>
<title>[Title that shows up at the top]</title>
<columns>

<text>[Bulleted description 1]</text>
</para>
<para>

<text>[Bulleted description 2]</text>
</para>
</columns>
</previewPaneView>
<conditions>
<condition name="shcond://v1#SkuEquals" invert="true">
<parameter name="Sku" value="anyn" />
</condition>
</conditions>
</task>
Be sure to remove the "[]" when you edit that.
Here's my take on Windows 7:
I've used a lot of Windows versions over my life. From Windows 3.1 when I was 4 years old, to Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, and now 7. People said ME was terrible, but then praised 2000. People said Vista was terrible, and then praised 7 like it was a god. I, however, am unbiased. I love all of those operating systems, no matter what anyone says. Mainly because i had to use all of them for a year or more, and got acquainted with them. But all this is insignificant. Out of all the operating systems i've used, 7 is clearly a winner. It builds on the excellent stability, and features of Windows Vista SP2, while adding more speed, simplicity, and security. It's simply the fastest, simplest, and sexiest operating system Microsoft has put out since Windows 95.
Many people say to wait 6 months to a year to get a new operating system. Don't with 7. 7 is in a nutshell Windows Vista SP3. It's ready to deploy, install, distribute, whatever you want to do with it. You won't be disappointed with purchasing 7.

Which retroactively made you lose your bet.
So, I've got a question for you nice peeps here in the Windows forum. I've been thinking about buying Windows 7 as it's only about 100€ here in Finland (Home Premium). The question is the obvious one: is it really worth it?
I could roll my XP still for ages and have not a worry in the world. But all these positive reviews and the nice new features are making me roll more and more toward the ominous 7. I'm just about to order a new HDD and it'd be nice to see something else than the ugly, boring old XP.
Should I save up two months to finally get Windows 7? What makes it so drastically different from Windows XP that would make me REALLY want it?
I'm an avid game designer / gamer / photoshop artist and I love playing old games so those should work on it if I buy it. By old I don't mean DOS old I mean "Theme Park World" old.
Windows 7
Fuck Yes
I'm still on build 7068.

how do you make it so it opens XP mode in a window for a single program instead of having the taskbar, etc?

If the program installs to the start menu, all you have to do is open 7's start menu, go down to XP mode, and go to Installed Applications.
Outrage! I had first blood on other one:((

I really need to get 7.
Woo!

I am on Windows 7 Professional loving it
I've been enjoying Windows 7 in beta form for about 6 months now, and I look forward to many years of the same on the retail version.

Funny, I'm bored of 7 and am ready for 8.

This. Vista had problems during beta testing. All 7 had was a stupid corrupted folder icon back in 7068 :c
Also AutoCAD is a tad sluggish on a virtual machine, but it still let me make a kitchen! :D

Jimmy, you could just use a newer version of AutoCAD :/

He has to use it for school.
Oh I see
For those of us with G11, G15, and the G19 keyboards from Logitech, I bring you a fix to get the volume and media keys working without Logitech's drivers! This was driving me nuts until I found this in Yahoo Answers:
Type services.msc into your run command.
Select the "Standard" tab at the bottom.
Now find the Human Interface Device Access service.
Right-click on it and change it's properties to Automatic.
Start the service.
Hit OK, and you're done!
Now you should be up and running with volume controls on your Logitech keyboard.
(I take no credit for this copy-pasta, just being helpful)

I have 09' but it refuses to install because it's "an unsupported operating system". That, and it can't save in an AutoCAD 2000 format correctly.

Tried installing it using Vista compatibility mode?
