it will fail to activate
plan a. just install a new operating system.
plan b. take the hard drive out of your old computer and put it into the new one.
plan c. put in the old hard drive as master and the new one as slave, then clone it, then switch it back.
Not sure if plan c is actually possible though.
My friend managed to throw Windows XP on a disk for me when I got a virus, I know it's possible. I think he got it off a torrent with CD compatibility, but I'm not sure.
i put my old hard drive in the new computer and, as i expected, i had windows telling me that due to significant hardware changes, i had to re activate xp.
@combineguru. are you sure?, i thought there were ways of transferring an exact image of a hard drive onto another one, isnt this the same just without user files?

but if you get an operating system from a torrent, its likely that it comes with a virus or missing important files isnt it

although torrents are illegal, you just have to find a clean one and it is fine. Just read the comments. There are some good ones out there. The only thing different about them is that some completely useless things may be removed but it can easily be added back.
try just using the CD you used to install your old one.
my original disk is ruined so i cant use that. iv tried.
also, iv heard that torrenting an operating system is legal if you use your original key.
wait...this is my brothers account. still the same person, sorry.
No its not legal. and I havent even seen a torrent that hasnt been cracked.
You can get it OEM from newegg for 90 dollars btw.

Not necessarily.
Torrents are simply a technique used to transfer files, therefore the concept is not illegal.
Downloading an operating system via a torrent may or may not be illegal (its a highly controversial argument, some argue that if you already own a license than you have the right to download it) it is most definitely moral in my opinion, only if you already own a genuine license (you paid for it), and you don't break the terms of the original EULA.
The terms of the "original" EULA probably prohibits distribution of the ISO, which would make your point completely moot. There's no argument to have, it's not a matter of opinion. Either the license permits it, or not.

I already said it is illegal, I was debating whether or not it is moral, since you paid for an original copy, morally you are not stealing by downloading an extra copy, since the company loses nothing, and again, you paid for their software.

The way I see is that you pay for a license, and Microsoft is nice enough to supply a disc with the software on it too.
If you download the iso from a torrent site, make sure the MD5 or SHA1 sum of that iso matches Microsoft's MD5/SHA1.

What does the checksum have to do with it?
Just fucking torrent it. Why do people care so much about legality? I'm sure most people have broken the law at some point.
And it's Legal to download the ISO you're only getting the disc taking a cd key is illegal.
