Basically, sometimes my computer will stop opening files, applications, and such. I also can't log off or restart, so I get to do a happy fun time hard reboot so I can get the thing to start working again. It seems to happen when opening files and happens at random. It just happened on this computer. I can still USE the programs that are open (how I'm posting), I just can't start anything new.
does any crash-report thing come up when it stops working?
No. It just won't start any processes, and doesn't give me any kind of error right away or on reboot. Say I had firefox open, I could use it. If it wasn't open, however, I wouldn't be able to open it. Can't open or view files that aren't already open. Can't log out, shut down, restart, etc. After a hard reboot it works, but sometimes opening a file (not any file in specific, though I've found that one iso file does it when I try to mount it virtually) causes this to happen. Doesn't happen often, but it is VERY annoying when it does.
Rather you have a coupted operating system, a dieing motherboard, bad hard drive, or system conflicts. I have the same issues with mine. But i get the erorr messege, and mine resets it self...so yea.
I had this exact problem.
I ran chkdsk (Windows repair thingy.) and it stopped doing it.
Just right-click your harddrive, click properties, then tools, then Check for Errors (Or something like that.)
Should do the trick.
Registry glitch, possible driver conflicts maybe.
Do the chkdsk as Rixx suggested.
