Gone homo wasn't a good game. The story was bad and gameplay nonexistent.
No Cave Story? Come on now.
This was probably the most divisive list in the office. There are so many games we all wanted to make the cut - Endless Legend, Prison Architect, Cave Story, Super Meat Boy, and Binding of Isaac to name a few. I'd be really interested to see what games you guys would have added (and which games you would have taken off to include them in the top 15).

People seem to judge Gone Home on what it wasn't rather than what it was. It wasn't supposed to have thrilling gameplay, or a Nolanesque plot.
What it was was a very human story, told in a unique way. If it didn't click with you, I'm sorry.

The goal of the game was to be boring? I guess it succeeded then.

the underwhelming story aside it wasn't that bad but i honestly don't see it as being one of the "best" indie games, it doesn't belong here
there are other games in it's genre that did a much better job but haven't gotten as much recognition
Positively surprised that Gunpoint made it.
Other than that, it was mostly just predictable and occasionally shit choices

If you are your coworkers haven't checked it out yet you should play Door Kickers. It plays a lot like Frozen Synapse but it's a lot more fluid in letting you alter your orders. You can even control your men in real time, but it's not really designed for that.
No Super Meat Boy or Isaac Rebirth
Why
Minecraft seems like it would've been obligatory, being so huge and actually lots of fun.
Never really got why Gone Home was the one first-person adventure game (or walking simulator, if you prefer) that really took off. Don't really get what's so special about it compared to, say, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
The thing that prevents me from agreeing with an otherwise predictable (though accurate) list is gone home since it's not even that great. Just toss it out and make room for something like cortex command or binding of isaac.
Plenty that I would have liked to have seen on the list, but it's not a bad list by any stretch. That's a good selection of games.
Gone Home included, fight me.
This isn't really that bad of a list, the only inclusion I really question was Gone Home.
I take it that Starbound wasn't on the list as it was for released, non Early Access games?
no Terraria, no cataclysm, 0/10

There are countless indie games that I'd put ahead of Starbound in its current state.

Agree, the only things I disagree with on the list are Darwinia (it was good not great though, I love introversion for other reasons) and definitely gone home, that shouldn't be anywhere close to "Best" indie game.

the people who worked on it had connections to the industry, IIRC
it's similar to how depression quest managed to take off

i'm pretty sure it doesn't qualify as an indie game these days
Forced, literally the best coop game I have ever played.
La-Mulana, a masterpiece
Cave Story, a masterpiece
Volgaar the Viking, difficult and badass
Skullgirls, a MASSIVE milestone in the quality of indie games. To make a fighting game that matches and even beats a lot of professional Japanese games in terms of mechanics is a unfathomable undertaking. Like holy shit, you don't have to like the artstyle (I don't) or the style of the game, but it's pure quality, fighting games are really hard to make right.
Super Meat Boy, another masterpiece in platforming mechanics and controls.
Kung Fu Strike: The warriors rise, the most surprising indie game I have ever played. It's the closest an indie game has ever come to a Devil May Cry style game. Lots of small frame window techniques, hard as balls on harder difficulties, badass combos you can do. Not to mention how many indie games from China can you say are this good?
I've played almost all of the games on there (not including Gone Home and Frozen Synapse), they're all great games in their own rights. But I just wouldn't of skimped on Bastion, Cave Story and Super Meat Boy.
The two I most likely have not put on that list would be Gone Home and Darwinia (even though I liked this game I just wouldn't put it on this list)
However seeing Gunpoint up there is a pleasant surprise.

I don't want to say its because one of the characters is gay, but that always one of the talking points when the game gets brought up.

Minecraft is as indie as it gets.
Selling millions of copies doesn't suddenly makes it not indie anymore.
No Cave Story which started this fad in the first place? but instead Gone Homo? -0/10 never post again
darwinia is a real fun game. i am glad its on this list.
I swear one day I will learn how to play Dwarf Fortress. One day.

Gunpoint is still my favorite game to date.
I'm really hoping Francis makes a sequel.

Only issue I see about adding Minecraft to the list is that everyone has heard of it.
It's simply preaching to the choir when the space could easily go lesser known games.
Something I'd add is a small list of given "Best Indie Games" almost everyone has heard of about (Cave Story, Spelunky, Minecraft, Dorf Fort, etc.) with maybe a small blurb at most.
This list would only take a few lines and it exists just as something to preface the article so it cover the generic choices every list makes.
Once that is out of the way, go into gems which really deserves proper attention with proper pictures and descriptions.
Also, Cave Story is a perfect game (among a few) and the best sidescroller of all games so missing it is inexcusable. True Nicalis had their hands on Cave Story for porting purposes but the freeware version is pure indie.
