So today, I drove around town for a few minutes with a laptop in the passenger's seat and let it poll all the 802.11 capable devices in range. While I'm sure several of you may not be interested in the results, a few of you may be. After reviewing the list that was generated, I was somewhat interested. My reason for doing this has a long story behind it, but mainly a teacher at my school had his iPod stolen recently. His idea is that he'll poll all devices that come within range of a laptop he'll have set up in his room and that he'll see it show up. I decided to test the idea by running a laptop around town for a few minutes. Mainly the results I find interesting are the number of unsecured access points plus some of the SSIDs that showed up. If this thread really is dull enough for nobody to care, just let it drop to the bottom, and we'll all move on.
I polled almost 800 access points, and over 150 devices capable of connecting to these access points.
After reviewing the generated list, I found that at least a third of the access points are open, and with internet available. While using other people's internet isn't the best idea, there are few places you won't find an open access point with internet, even in a small town, should you have some "emergency". The next thing I noticed were the SSIDs that I found.
Many of the people use the default SSID on their access points. Many of them are something they could change themselves, 30 of them being "linksys" and other smaller groups like BELKIN, NETGEAR, ACTIONTEC, and the smallest being dlink at only 5. The largest group is those who are renting equipment from companies like Qwest, and very few have actually changed the SSID. There is about 100 devices on the list that fall into this category.
Some SSIDs showed up that I wasn't expecting. Things like:
PurpleMoose
I'm hiding in your closet
MyLittlePwny
No Acces Here
SecuredNetwork
SpongeBob
ShyFish
Taco
welcome to the freak show
firebutt
doghouse
ShinyCat
starfleet
MEGABOB
Big House
Poop_Deck
StargateSGX
Pork and beans
picklesjive
Gunslinger
TheDeathStar
yup
Goldfinger
NotYours
my favorite: fuckoffmyinternet7
and finally, one that caught me most off guard: Bureau of Piracy

Another thing I'd like to mention is that many people had two access points running, one for personal use, and one marked as a guest access point with open encryption.

Driving around with a computer generating a log of WiFi devices is called wardriving. There is nothing wrong with it, its just fun.
Wardriving is fun, no?
I remember seeing a SSID called "i have a big dick" once

Nice one. :v: I forgot it's called "wardriving" or I would have said something about it. Oh well, I had fun with it. I found a few more SSIDs and added them to the list.
I saw one that was "Can't touch this" and it was unsecured.
My SSID is LaFlowerPower, because the girl across the street calls me that and it is a variation on my actual last name

Good to know, although most of them don't. Thanks for correcting me.
My SSID is Homenetwork, I'm the system admin for everything in this house.
I'm so creative :derp:

Its the same way here... and mine is dlink until further notice. I got a new router and I didn't feel like using the same name from the previous one.
I've seen someone with the SSID "Admin"
It didn't have a WEP key and it had a 100mbp/s connection, but it disappeared mysteriously a day after I found it. :frown:
What do you need to do this - i want to make a map of my area - any gear i may need?

Laptop with Wifi.
And something like http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
My SSID is shazbot.
Last time I went wardriving, I found a network without security named ThePirateCoast. Connected to it and left them a txt document on their desktop. Just to thank them for some of the movies I got off their system.
Felt so nerdy when I signed it as "Your friendly neighborhood SSIDerman"

My iPod gets some fun networks
Just as I'm leaving school I can pick up two of my favorites
Megatron and THRILLHO
Currently in range i have:
ESSID:"gesundheit22"
ESSID:"Lukshaitis"
ESSID:"2WIRE303"
ESSID:"BuiBui"
ESSID:"GIPSONHOUSE"
ESSID:"Dinosaur"
ESSID:"2WIRE504"
ESSID:"kendall124"
ESSID:"fashion01"
ESSID:"Walter"
ESSID:"2WIRE480"
ESSID:"ray629"
ESSID:"CHTR3793"
ESSID:"2WIRE525"
ESSID:"BlackCat"
ESSID:"western"
ESSID:"e029"

ESSID:"2WIRE068"
ESSID:"NETGEAR"
ESSID:"2WIRE784"
ESSID:"2WIRE275"
ESSID:"qtpie"
ESSID:"Lance has aids"
Walter is mine, 2WIRE480 doesn't have a password, and I've cracked 2WIRE303, 2WIRE525, e029, and NETGEAR. The rest are WPA or too far away to capture enough packets to crack.
A few tens of miles from me there's a network caleld "El sexo de internet"
Personally I have DD-WRT on my router, I have it broadcasting like 15 SSIDs, all stupid things like "100Mb cable trials", "Can't touch this", "Go away" and so on.
Ours is BrightCat.
Idk why still, it was just the default one given to us by our new router.
Before it was just "Linksys."
There's only one network besides ours around here. We don't live in a too computer oriented neighborhood...
Here are a few of mine: (note I live in the first building in an apartment)
I fucked a white bitch
I just had sex
Eat my dick cunt
linksys
*apartment name*
linksys
Sugertits
dlink
Lighthouse (mine)
linksys
1source (internet company)
SPARTA
new
*address of their apartment, idiots*
Ima gonna fuck a white bitch
default
belkin
Galvaton
Home
Also Tezz, I have DD-WRT too, how do you make multiple SSID's?
In the wireless tab there should be an add button under "Virtual Interfaces"
Within range of my router I'm seeing "default", "dlink", and three "2wire####".
All are using no encryption except the dlink one which is using WEP
My god I am surrounded by idiots

:smith:
What is the best/easiest router to install DD-WRT on?
This: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124190&cm_re=linksys_wrt54g-_-33-124-190-_-Product
It is a really great router.
Fuck me I'm tired.
What should I name it?
I plan on limiting it to 1 mb/s. I need a funny name so people will think its pretty fast and try to connect.
