So last night as i was plugging out my PC I heard static coming from the double socket that it was plugged into, then static coming from the PSU. This morning I turned on my PC and it wont POST. Instead of the normal POST beep I get a high pitched followed 5-10 seconds later by a low pitched beep. It continues to run but nothing appears on screen. My rig Asus Z68 pro i5 2500k (not overclocked) Evga Gtx570 Silverstone 850w psu corsair vengeance DDR3
Check the manual and see if they have the beep codes, or do a quick Google check. If a sound is coming from the PSU unplug the thing from the wall.
You probably fired the psu and maybe more.
Shit, hope the warranty covers it.
I'm always waiting for somebody to say their PSU just blew up.
I'm always waiting for somebody to say their PSU just blew up.
The computer *should* turn off because of Ripple current before the electrolytic substance in the caps boil. Capacitors have safety valves that prevent explosion. More information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_plague This would be the maximum damage possible: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b9/Vp6_blown_capacitor.jpg (linked for size) But if the metal vent on the top isn't there for some reason you would have a tiny grenade in your computer. Sort of the reason power supplies have metal casings.
I think everything's fine now cept for one stick of ram that got fried.
