i much prefer a new well-done zelda game than a 'new ip' like watch dogs
i much prefer a new well-done zelda game than a 'new ip' like watch dogs
But then someone will just make the argument that they are rehashing old ideas and not coming up with enough new content (which this article directly addresses.) And I wouldn't say Watch Dogs is necessarily a 'new ip', mainly because it belongs exclusively to Ubisoft and its associates. A new ip is something like Elite Beat Agents, which received almost absolutely no attention here in America despite being one of the best games on the DS. Nintendo, astoundingly enough, produces new content almost consistently, even though it's nowhere near as profitable.

nintendo has occasionally been making new ips for awhile it's just that noone cares for some reason
no one cares about new nintendo IPs because the visuals lack nintendo charm and at first glance you don't know that it's a nintendo-made game compare mariokart 8 or pikmin 3 to steel diver or splatoon, the new stuff just doesn't have an art style that grabs your attention, therefore people don't care

Steel Diver is just submarines so no shit it's not going to have the same charm as Kirby or Mario, I find Splatoon's art style interesting enough. And I'm sick of having wildly different games in a series or Nintendo having new and fresh gameplay but it has Mario's face on it so it must surely be identical to all these other games because I don't fucking know a thing about Nintendo games but am passing judgement anyway.
Someone once tried to say Wario Ware was unoriginal because it's a spinoff of Mario The moral of the story is; stop trying to criticise shit you don't understand
nintendo has occasionally been making new ips for awhile it's just that noone cares for some reason
People rather bitch about how Nintendo's one of the few companies that can keep a single IP fresh for several years.
well they do make derivative stuff like new super mario bros and mario party so it's not like they're guilt free
What makes Nintendo games often feel fresh though is that they usually play very differently. Take the new Toad game for instance, it's not a new IP but it feels fresh just because the mechanics are way different from a tradition Mario game AND it's not about Mario. If a different, new character, was implemented instead of Toad not nearly as many people would care. Creating new IPs that stick just isn't easy to do today since most people just want more of the same (see EA and Activision). So yes, while it was a decision to make the give the game more hype, it also feels new. Nintendo excels at that. They do spend more time working on them though which is why we're always excited for them. Take MK8, it's a franchise that's been on every console since the SNES, and MK8 generated more hype and turned out to be their most popular MK game yet. So yes, they milk franchises for all they are worth, but they do a damn good job doing it.
You know what else is great about Zelda releases, other than the fact that they're kept fresh with new mechanics, characters, writing and gameplay mechanics? The fact that they know they're going to rake in a shitload of money, so they let the newer people make whatever the fuck they want. I saw Splatoon and immediately thought "This wouldn't be happening if they weren't working on a new Zelda game."
I'd rather see a new F-Zero, Starfox, or Metroid over a new IP.
People rather bitch about how Nintendo's one of the few companies that can keep a single IP fresh for several years.
I think people might just be oversaturated by playing the same characters again. Even if Mario & co are iconic characters for Nintendo, I get bored them very easily. Although I'm a person who prefers to have new characters and content in a game.
A new character or IP doesn't neccessarly make a new game. e.g. a company creating a thirdperson cover shooter that plays exactly like Gears of War didn't do anything new, they just copied a game and gave it a slightly different look. So if Nintendo would create a new IP that plays exactly like one of the Mario games, it won't make a difference. But it's indeed a difference if they create a new gameplay and put Characters from their established IPs in there. If you expect something like a M Rated game from Nintendo, you're certainly wrong. Ofc. there have been some in the past, but all of them came from second parties. This is something i think Nintendo should do a little more. e.g. since they have the money, why not go and fund Shadows of the Eternals as a Nintendo exclusive. That way they could even name it Eternal Darkness: Shadows of the Eternals.
I'd rather they add new things to existing IP's than to flat out make a new thing that won't really be successful. Things like the mario sunshine concept are a bit outlandish. They make NEW IP's all the time too. Animal Crossing, Pikmin, Wii Fit, Nintendogs. That's just last decade off the top of my head.

I prefer darker more mature themes which Nintendo usually doesn't do. They should just do what Disney does and form a parent company to make all there dark shit that they don't want to contaminate there name.
yeah nintendo have been keeping mario and friends interesting for centuries that's pretty good for a game company
i don't see the issue if there's a market for it
