So basically you are renting a 256 MB minecraft server with far less functionality for quadruple the price.. Well I guess it's great for kids...

There are dozens of decent hosts out there that literally setup up everything for you, and have click to install FTB packs and will help you install mods if you submit tickets. These servers are also using bukkit/spigot generally meaning they support mods, run far better, and most resellers will be more than happy to help you scale stuff based on your needs. I understand not everyone wants to type stuff into terminal and do it themselves on a rented VPS, but how is this even remotely as good as, let alone better than, the dozens of minecraft hosts out there? 10 players at once? I can do 3 times that, probably more, with a shitty VPS that costs me 5 dollars a month, while running a fucking 1.6 server, a TS3 server, and whatever other web shit I'm doing at the time.

Having an official way to set up a persistent world with your friends is cool, regardless of functionality. Suddenly anyone can have a fun server to share with their friends. Things like forwarding ports are a huge pain for people who don't know much about computers. Just by it being offered by Mojang it's immediately trusted by parents, and it's set up on the same website as Minecraft.

Which explains the terrible pricing. All in all Realms was planned to be what would kill off tons of MC Hosts but all Mojang really did was show why paying less for a real server is always best.

It's got the Minecraft brand attached to it. It's immediately trusted by less-than-knowledgeable customers.

I figure I should dispel this misinformation - Multiplay are entirely uninvolved with Minecraft Realms. We don't do any of the hosting for it. I do think this is a little harsh though. Costs probably aren't higher than average just for the money, there are many factors that raise server costs. Obviously the kind of no-hassle setup and maintenance that comes with a service like this isn't for everyone, particularly the tech-minded. Minecraft has an enormous very young audience that generally speaking aren't quite at the point yet where they're able to digest some of the more technical aspects of running a server but would still like somewhere persistent and private to play with friends. They also don't necessarily have tech-minded parents that are able to set-up and maintain a server for them. A service like this is aimed at those customers while there are plenty of lower cost and lower support options for those capable of crafting and maintaining services themselves. I don't think it's unethical to provide a service for that audience provided no blocking of other services occurs that provide cheaper alternatives to those capable of operating their own servers. As long as there are other options there's no need to ridicule Mojang for providing something to a section of the userbase.
