i have an old 5g ipod that i have no use for (The audio doesn't work) Is there a way to get rid of everything on it, including the OS and such? i just want to use it for a spare 30gb hd. i want it to automatically show up in my computer without itunes recognizing it.
I assume you can just format it using Windows, or even diskpart, but if not, either try doing it through Windows setup or even through Linux.
Install Rockbox
Just format it entirely, there's a ROM firmware that takes over that allows you to use it as an HD afaik.
Throw it on the pavement. Hard.

Yeah the impact will effectively erase the iPod OS but the rest of the HDD should remain untouched due to Apple safety measures.
You could remove the hard drive from the iPod and use an external case. I think dealextreme sells them.
