i have been tasked with helping a friend purchase a laptop. seeing as i know jack shit about laptops i thought i'd ask for your help
budget: $1300-1500 USD
if it included microsoft office that'd be good
he wants to game on it. i know for a fact he'll be getting Civ 5.
he also wants a "decent amount of ram", but considering what he has now, that shouldn't be an issue. actually, he'll probably be editing video on it(short films) so he may need a bit more but idk
he also wants a good screen
please help me
At this budget, as long as you get a laptop with an i5 or an i7 and a radeon 6600/5700 or greater or geforce 540 or greater you can't go wrong. Everything else is basically preference, like screen size and accesories.

Did some looking on newegg.
Here are two nice i7 laptops:

Does he need a huge resolution screen (for Photoshop use or his editing videos for example)? 1920x1080? 1366x768?

The MSI has a too huge screen resolution for its graphic card, the Toshiba one seems to be better.

If your friend is really into gaming, the ASUS G73SW seems to be a better solution (and it has also a Full HD screen which is good for softwares)
he doesn't really need a huge resolution screen
forget i mentioned the video editing thing. he's not going to be doing anything fancy in that regard

i guess if this holds true then i should be fine
any suggestions are still welcome
Then, follow chipset's suggestion. But don't forget the GT 540m can't deal with a full HD screen when gaming. The Toshiba laptop is a better choice.
