Hey, so I know a bit about computers, but not enough to know what new computer rig I should get.
I'm planning to play games some high-end games like Battlefield Heroes, Rainbow Six Raven Shield...jk but like ARMA2, the upcoming STALKER, and possibly Crysis if the rig is in my budget range.
My budget is $500 or lower--including a monitor (idc how big as long as it works)
I basically need some help figuring out what video card is best and where should I buy this computer (i.e. configurator like ibuypower, newegg, or some big brand like Dell or HP).
TY in advance.

Is this an ok setup?
Intel Pentium Dual-Core Processor E5300 2.6GHz 800MHz 2MB LGA775 CPU, Retail
ASRock G31M-S Core 2 Quad/ Intel G31/ FSB 1600(OC)/ A&V&L/ MATX Motherboard
Super Talent DDR2-800 4GB (2x2GB) Memory Kit
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4350 512MB DDR2 DVI/HDMI PCI-Express Video Card, Retail
Seagate ST3500418AS 500GB SATA2 7200rpm 16MB Hard Drive
Sony Optiarc DDU1678A-0B 18X DVD-ROM (Black), Bulk
Topower/ePower Thunder EP-500XPF 500W Power Supply
and vista home basisc 64 bit
all for around $400
btw even though i'm playing relatively high end games, i am ok with putting them on medium settings because i'm getting pretty used to playin on low graphics on mai 5 yr old dell laptop with less memory than any gamer would want for gaming =)
Ideally, you'd want $500 for a rig without a monitor. Any way you can save up some more cash?
You'd be best buying your parts from Newegg and building it yourself.
Ninja'd.
But do what Adzi said.
And can you save more money?

I don't understand how you can criticize somebody when you yourself bought an Alienware with crossfire 4670's.
As for the OP, your setup can work as a budget build, but I highly suggest you buy a more familiar power supply, like Antec or Corsair.
Edit: No, OP, you don't seem to know much about computers. That build won't perform, but it is good for a basic build not for gaming.
Nevermind, this thread is actually making me frown after rereading the OP.
Ok... so how fast should the processor be at least?
and is 512 mb of vram enough for just medium graphics at a reasonable resolution (1280x1024)?

I would recommend an AMD build instead. The Phenom II X4 955 is currently going for $165 USD. You can also get DDR3 RAM (4g 2x2gb sticks) for about $70.
Try and make an AMD build, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

lol yeah brand name of RAM "super talent"? wtf but come on i'm not really on planning to play cryisis, just at least STALKER, ARMA, and L4D2
TY for your advice

I don't really have a lot of cash and I was hoping for a processor for less than $100.
However, my friend has what teh Combine Guru would call trash:
2.66 Dual Core AMD processor (cannot remember what model)
most likely 512 mb of VRAM
3 gb of RAM on a 32 bit vista
He can run L4D on Med to High with good frame rates (seems at average 40)
I just want to get a BUDGET desktop that is better than my current setup (don't laugh my parents got it like FIVE years ago when all I needed was word and crap)
1.86 AMD sempron single core
896 mb RAM (lol)
Vista 32 bit (shulda gottin XP)
and 256 Dedicated graphics (only good thing considering it was 2004 or 2003)
It's a laptop

It's still an Alienware.
Hey, if he can't save up then this is still far better than his old one. Try to get at least a 4670, though.

I don't like to Alienware cases. Too many LEDs for me.
Do an AMD build really.
Even then you need at least 700$.
Or get your OS in some other way.
The pc you are building can run Crysis on low(If you are lucky) and l4d on medium.
P.S. Alienware suck's and annyone who buys from them is a retard.
They are ugly and way overpriced.

This.
I just made myself a new rig with a Phenom II x4 3.2Ghz, 4gb 1333mhz ram and a ATi 5770 and I can play Crysis on almost full graphics at 4x AA with a very respectable FPS. Shit is SO cache.
Eventually going to buy another 5770 for some epic crossfireness.

Okay let me tell you why you friends build it trash. My fuckin integrated graphics can run l4d2 on high setting averaging around 50 fps. With a phenom II x2.

Well I don't really know how to tell FPS, so its not accurate. I just know which its not bad and its at least 40 (maybe bad internet)

Internet does not effect fps. :downs: I am just saying that you friends computer is shitty. Also will you stop jsut giving the memory on a graphics card since it is way more important on what card it is other than how much memory it has.

A sever, however, can affect fps. (Only in horribly made games based off Java :v:)
But do go with an amd/ati build (790GX motherboard preferably).
You won't be disappointed
5770's are ~$160 and 5750 ~120.
5750 is about a 4830, that can run most games you'd like to.
Unless you go with a 65nm quad core from AMD, it should be fine and relatively low priced.
Edit: I just bought a 1TB HDD from WD for 80 bucks.

The 5750 is a bit better than the 4770. I am thinking around 4850 range.

If this "rig" can run arma (in description) 2 on high around 20 fps, why cant a 400 dollar rig run it on high on 30 or medium on 40+?

It has a 3850 which rapes the card you have in your build.

I know. I mean on Rainbow Six Raven Shield I have to put it on Medium to keep it smooth--ITS A FRIGGIN 6 YEAR OLD GAME
[editline]06:07PM[/editline]
How bout this?
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD4550 512MB
And I'm looking at a Phenom dual core 3.0ghz processor
Also, I tried to build one on Newegg, but because of my somewhat limited experience with computers, I get confused if the Mobos and CPUs are compatable.
Like if I want an AMD CPU that is AM3, I have to get a Mobo that works with AM3? wait *facepalm*
scratch that
kk im basically stumped on what video card I should get
Best one for under $75?
Enough to run arma on medium with 30+ fps on regular firefights (assuming all the other factors ie processors and like are fast enough)

Hey so what is your video card Phir3?
One guy was talking smack bout your system.
However, hasn't it like never been upgraded in forever too?
What mobo are you rockin?
Asus M4A79XTD EVO
Under 75$ would be the 4670.
I made a thread here with a list of common systems:

This one is from there:

Nice and cheap system for the light gamer. All recent games will run well on this, but you should expect to turn down the graphics a bit.
$530
Upgradable to 4gb ram, HD5000 Video card and a quad core when you have the cash.
You can save money on the case, DVD drive and maybe HDD.
Do note that windows is not included.

That is one crappy budget build.
Example of a good budget budget build.
