Crysis has poor performance in Vista64, not in XP32.

I run my machine with two seperate hard drives, one running vista and the other xp, as described in the title. They have (essentially) the same files on them, including Crysis.
However-- Crysis is simply unplayable on vista, at the same settings as I have it in XP. The framerate is almost the same-- but I experience a stutter whenever I move the mouse or move forward that breaks game flow and is ridiculously frustrating.
Any tips or ideas as to what could be causing this?
DirectX10 vs 9?
Set Vista to run it in Dx9 mode, it'll run better.

I'll try that after my re-install finishes-- but I was hoping to use the (supposed) benefits of dx10.1 to give Crysis some AA.
lemme guess 2 gb of ram?
4 gigs, actually.
Might as well post a bit more of my specs--
4850 512mb
C2D E7200 3.16Ghz
4gigs ddr2 667 ram
E7200 = Bottleneck.
DDR2 667 = Bottleneck.
Try a Q9550 with DDR2 800 memory, 4GB of it.
The 4850 is a great card, but a 4870 (or two in CrossFire) would do you more justice.
I overclocked the E7200 to 3.16 Ghz (possibly higher).
The problem isn't hardware-- Crysis runs flawlessly, on the SAME HARDWARE, on XP.
The jittering occurs every time a sound needs to be loaded-- is there a way to pre-cache sounds?
Seriously this is bullshit and I may just stick to XP for a bit if this keeps up
do you have proper drivers for all of your hardware, soundcard included
[editline]01:11AM[/editline]
the default vista drivers for video cards is shit if you're using that
My drivers are the newest from ATI, 9.4 (I think)
Anyhow, switching to dx9 fixed it, temporarily. Now I'm curious as to why dx10 hurts my performance so bad
Start it in DX9 instead of DX10. DX10 in crysis wastes performance.

Obviously because its newer and more complex, though in Crysis all dx10 really does it make shadows look better among a couple other things, but there are a lot of shadows in that game so it rapes fps. Or Crysis isn't well optimized for 10, could be a number of things.
have you updated crysis itself
the patches run tons better than the 1.0 version

Because CryEngine was written by 2 monkeys and a dog. It refuses to run properly on anything.

Sounds like it could be a page file problem.
You said it stutters when sounds need to be loaded?
Perhaps you need to update your Vista sound drivers?
I had the same problem with my X-Fi soundcard - on XP I had drivers installed from a CD. Crysis stuttered. Installed newest drivers from Creative site, no more stuttering.
Or it could be some I/O problem? Vista likes to rape your harddrives more than XP, it seems. Try turning off some services that could be using the HDD a lot. OR, if you have a SATA drive, try updating the drivers for the SATA controller, too?

Aha. I couldn't find the right Vista drivers on the Creative website, so I used the ones on the CD. I'll update my x-fi's drivers.

If it was written by 2 monkeys and a dog, then you shall be able to create a similar engine in about a week or something like that yes?
I'll be waiting :)

Oh and yeah, DX10 really rapes performance, mainly because of the lots and lots of errors, and if you weren't using AA on XP, but are using it on Vista, then that might be an issue too.
AA rapes FPS in Crysis too.

Good job
Now :dogout:
DDR 667 ram is NOT a bottleneck unless you are running the highest end quad, and even then there will be absolutly no difference in real world tests...
That E7200 isnt a real bottleneck and shouldnt be causing the lag
it is infact, Vista which is causing the lag

What?
Can't you accept the harsh truth?
:dogout:
Reznor is right, OP even said it ran fine in XP. The only thing that changed was Vista and Dx10

Yes, because it couldn't possibly be anything else causing this problem.
It's kinda convienient then huh :geno:
Alot of people i know say they magicly lost FPS under Vista, shit even i did
I think DX10 is to blame. In Far Cry 2, I get on average better FPS with DX10, but the framerate varies much more and can feel like stuttering. I get a lower average FPS (about 30 vs 33) with DX9, but the framerate varies much less so it feels smoother.
It's not vista. I just ran Crysis on DX9 in vista and it worked fine.
Are you using the 64-bit binaries for Crysis? They should be in it's program folder.

Yeah, I made sure to make a shortcut to the x64 version of Crysis.
It turns out there's a problem with Creative sound cards and dx10 Crysis. There are a few fixes available but for now I'm just going to stick with XP.
How can you run Crysis in DX9 with a Vista?

Right click the game icon and select DX9
