I'm a perfectionist and the fact that desktop icons are showing up in Windows Explorer annoys me. Is it possible to get them off/hide them from "Desktop" within Windows Explorer? This: BTW, offtopic, my post count.
Usually favorites are easily customizable. Is it not possible to just right click and delete from under the favorites? I can't test because I'm on linux

Like "Libraries, Homegroup, Joel, Computer, Network, Control Panel, Recycle Bin" gone.

Look on the left nav bar for "change desktop icons". Select that, and uncheck what you want. Click on apply/ok, and move along.
why would you want that? because I don't think you want to clear your desktop from all that stuff(the desktop outside of the windows explorer file manager) If you just want a empty desktop folder why not create a folder called desktop, assign the desktop icon to it and add it to favorites?
But then it isn't really the desktop :/
Why yes you can do this! I believe you can also right click the desktop and click hide icons
